Breaking news: Secret Service investigating threat from Scranton Palin rally
Source: Scranton Times-Tribune

The U.S. Secret Service is investigating a threatening remark directed at Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama during a political event in Scranton.

The agency followed up on a report in The Times-Tribune that a member of the crowd shouted, "Kill him!" after one mention of Mr. Obama's name during a rally Tuesday for Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin.

The remark came while congressional candidate Chris Hackett was addressing the crowd at the Riverfront Sports Complex. There is no indication Mr. Hackett or Mrs. Palin, who took the stage a half-hour later, heard the remark.

The remark was reported almost immediately on the newspaper's Web site and today in the print edition.

Times-Tribune employees who covered the rally were interviewed today by the Secret Service.

Spokesman Darrin Blackford said the agency takes the threat seriously and will make an arrest if it can determine who shouted the remark.

38. They surely already know who said it.
I mean, McCain himself said we live in a much safer country because of Bush and the patriot act, etc.Ha! You can't tell me that those rallies aren't completely secure and videotaped from every angle. If they wanted him bad enough, they would already have him.

45. i doubt Republican rallies aren't watched like that. I would wager, however,
that Democratic rallies are so photographed, videotaped, miked, recorded, and otherwise spied on that a gnat couldn't fart without it being heard.

seem to be unwilling to do something about this that the SS wouldn't automatically step in and do something. Apparently now, hopefully they will.

they vociferously declaim the most arrant nonsense with real passion - like young school-children! I'm almost grateful that people in the UK, who don't understand the first thing about their country's politics, are too apathetic to vote, never mind to be activists.

5. You know they're just DYING for something like this...
to happen at an Obama event - a threat against McCain. Then they could have an equivalency that would make it all seem irrelevant (to them.) Oh, and of course the "perp" would be arrested right on the spot - none of this next-day stuff.

8. Catch any "Rovian" plants, too!
And if it happens at a Biden or Obama rally, I would be very suspicious that it would be a paid "plant" for just that purpose--to provide equivalency. So, *if* it happens at an Obama or Biden rally I *really* want that one caught immediately--so we can know where they came from--like from the McCain camp, for instance.

These people are playing with fire and must be stopped.

66. ah, you beat me to that one... I wouldn't put it past them. Just like

I wouldn't be surprised if they offered some assistance with the whole ACORN debacle. The likeliest culprit on much of that is lazy, not-too-swift employee who thinks it's funny or an easy buck. Very dumb. But if it wasn't someone like that, think about who would benefit from this story - and who would actually write in names that were really easy to spot, like "Jive Turkey"?

Would an Obama supporter use that name to help Obama? right.
Would an Limbaugh lug nut use that name to 1) make his racist self giggle and drool at his cleverness, as he thinks he might be able to make Obama look guilty if he messes up enough cards with silly, even racist names.... ?

Think about it... it was dumb before it started.

You're right - they are way past the threshold of being the catalyst of some real potential violence. That is so not okay I'm amazed that they have been willing to play along with it like really CLUELESS starfish (...and starfish don't have brains, if I remember correctly).

Hopefully, Obama supporters will all point to him simultaneously ISOLATING HIM FROM THE REST OF THE CROWD, and when he runs.... follow him to the parking lot and take down his license number.

Then when he is arrested the whole country will know he is a plant from the fringe!

for the climate they inspire with all of their fear/hate speak. I read yesterday,(here on DU),that Palin's speaking is very coded; As in, "Not one of us" = "Not White". Since 9/11, people have been afraid and now these underhanded candidates are whipping up a frenzy by feeding off of it.

Too bad the crowds at these rallies don't realize how badly they're being played. Or maybe they do, and they're just enjoying the ride.

They really give me the creeps.

I pray Obama stays safe. :hide:

Well, I live in Scranton and let me tell you, when Biden and the Clintons were in at the Complex on 10-12-08, the energy for Barack and his team was great!

Here's a national video that was made right here in Scranton about Sarah Palin. It features Tom Ryan, Running for Mayor of Scranton!

Why doesn't Beyond the Palin tell the crowd - before getting into the (red) meat of her speech - that people yelling "kill him!" and "terrorist!" are un-American? She and McCain share culpability for this, and - God forbid - if any harm should befall ANYONE, be it an Obama/Biden supporter or otherwise, McPalin should be punished for it.

32. I wonder if Palin and McCain will ease off the rhetoric which incites hysteria and hatred.

It would be nice, but probably too much to ask of Palin. She really enjoys working up a crowd.

I think, McCain however has enough humanity to realize this kind of stuff is really dangerous. We have lost too many really good people because of kooks, to lose another.

I think the Secret Service should double up it's protection of Obama. - they should charge the McCain campaign for the extra cost.

Hello all Undergrounders!

This story is just the next logical side effect of dirty politics. If McCain was such a Maverick, wouldn't he find a bold and unique way of politicking?

His serious lack of uniqueness really began with his choice of Sarah Palin as his VP. I mean if we allow her to take the nation's second highest office why not just offer it to anyone?

This video might make my sentiment a little bit clearer.

Check it out!

49. Check out this video from Ohio - Al Jazeera TV shot it
And its damn time American networks get out and expose these hateful looney tunes at McCain/Palin rallies!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRqcfqiXCX0

Frameshop: Ohio...Oh Brother
I grew up in the Midwest (Michigan), so I can say from experience that 99% of the depictions of Midwesterners as a bunch of backwards, racist ignoramuses are hooey. Then someone catches that 1% on video and I think,'Oh brother.' But as you watch this video of attendees at a Sarah Palin campaign rally in St. Clairsville, Ohio the key is not get angry or fearful, but to sit down and ask ourselves a very difficult question: What will it take to bring these folks back into the fabric of America life? It is a hard question to ask at moments like this, and even harder to answer.

Now, some people will say that this is a report from Al Jazeera TV, and so it should not be trusted. First off, that is nonsense. Second, even if one could attribute a political agenda to the reporting, it is difficult to deny what we see in the footage.

These are folks--ordinary folks--saying the most extraordinarily ignorant, racist, paranoid things. And they are saying them while walking in and out of a Sarah Palin event.

The video shows folks in Ohio who bring a startling level of bigotry and falsehoods about Barack Obama into a McCain campaign rally, and then walk out with all of those prejudices and lies having been confirmed.

At best, the Palin event affirms the dangerous misconceptions these folks have about a Presidential candidate. At worst it amplifies them and gives them coherence.

64. Freeper types claim to be all law and order,
surely they wouldn't harbor a TERRORIST in their midst? I'm positive the offending person has been turned over to law enforcement.

65. GOOD. Even if they did this just to make the statement, it would

be appropriate under the circumstances. Thank goodness they're taking it seriously - and doing so publicly. The probably deal with lots of ugly things that we never hear about. These nitwits (meaning McCain and Palin) are making the Secret Servicemen's jobs much harder and, yes, life-threatening. This is no joke. Imagine the heightened alert their brains must have to be in - constantly - because people do get fueled from a mob mentality, particularly if there's hate involved, I imagine. Yikes. Damn these people for being so reckless with the welfare of others. Deliberately.

disgusting...

Can you point to a non-Fox source for ANYTHING from the Obama side resembling what we are discussing?

92. WTF right back to you.
This is NOT a fox photo, for pete's sake. Learn how to view a picture's properties, would ya before you spout off! I just posted a random pic found at google. I have been a Dem for decades, not that I have to explain myself to YOU.

Thanks alot for such a cheery and warm welcome. Ugh. What a way to welcome newer members to DU.

:grr:

Picture link properties shows it belongs to someone here:

94. I never said the photo was Fox, jeenyus. I said "Can you point to a non-Fox source for ANYTHING..."
"...from the Obama side resembling what we are discussing?"

Still waiting for that.

:eyes:

For the record, the discussion is about threats made toward candidates at rallies. Please post a non-Fox link where this has occured at an Obama rally and is directed at McCain.

Simple enough for ya?

68. Every one of the assholes who makes these remarks,
or associates Obama with terrorists, should be hauled in for questioning, just so they know they're being heard and it's not okay. I'm afraid for Obama. If anything were to happen to him it would be a tragedy on a personal and national - nay, international scale.

I worried that the point is to establish that the U.S. SS was on top of these threats! So that, if Obama IS killed, their *sses are covered!

85. Last night when Obama mentioned that during the debate...
I could feel his concern...

not so much for himself, but for his family...

I think he's well aware of what nutjobs can, and will, do...not only to the objects of their hatred, but also to anyone associated with them.

In that moment, I saw a man who would likely give his own life to save his wife or kids. So even though he doesn't seem to have as much experience as many people would like him to have, for some reason, his own fear and concern for his family made me see him in a different light...I'm almost ten years older than Obama, but that moment showed me the protective father side of him, and I'll never forget the look on his face.

Not that I didn't feel safe with him before, but I feel safer now...

88. McCain told the mob today he was of proud of them.
There is no doubt in my mind that the people who shout "Kill Him" and such at the Palin/McCain rallies have their approval.

This is the republican base. This is the bottom of the barrel. :(

89. Flame Away
But allow me to quote from "Twelve Angry Men"

"#8: There's another thing I'd like to talk about for a minute. I think we've proven that the old man couldn't have heard the boy say "I'm going to kill you," but supposing—

#10: You didn't prove it at all. What're you talking about?

#8: But supposing he really did hear it. This phrase, how many times has each of us used it? Probably hundreds. "I could kill you for that, darling." "If you do that once more, junior, I'm going to kill you." "Come on, Rocky, get in there and kill him!" We say it every day. It doesn't mean we're going to kill someone. "

I'm with juror #8. IMHO, just a riled up dumbass who chose the wrong phrase. Safety first of course so he should be checked out. I won't crucify him before he can even address what he meant.
