ABC Refuses to Air Gore's Global Warming Ad
Source: Business & Media Institute

'We Campaign' petition has 79,000 signatures; claims oil and coal industry ads as reason for not airing 'Repower America' TV spot.

The media in the hip pocket of big oil and coal? Sounds like an outrageous claim given how much those industries get blasted on the networks. But that’s just what the CEO of the Al Gore’s Alliance for Climate Protection’s “We Campaign” has alleged.

CEO Cathy Zoi, in an Oct. 8 e-mail, complained that ABC, CBS and CNN aired TV spots for the oil and coal industry during the Oct. 7 presidential debate, but ABC was refusing to air theirs.

“Did you notice the ads after last night’s presidential debate?” Zoi wrote. “ABC had Chevron. CBS had Exxon. CNN had the coal lobby. But you know what happened last week? ABC refused to run our Repower America ad – the ad that takes on this same oil and coal lobby.” ...

17. Totalitarian Nations like Imperial Amerika DON'T HAVE FREE SPEECH.
As bet, they have a shadow of a whiff of Free Speech, just enough to provide Bushie Tyrants with Plausible Deniability so tat the sheep can still deny deny deny and pretend pretend pretend.

Free Speech? Yeah, we can mouth off (in fewer and fewer places without being Tazered) without being beaten or murdered, but everything ELSE that makes up Free Speech is hollow, empty or nonexistant.

Like dreaming TV "news" is even remotely independent from the Bushie Tyrants who own them.

21. Freedom of speech applies to governmental restrictions
Not private. If a company does not want to publish a particular ad, they are under no obligation to. I'm sure Girls Gone Wild would love to run an ad during the Superbowl and presidential debates, but that will never happen because no self-respecting broadcast network would ever put them on in that time slot. Obviously Gore's ad is nothing like a Girls Gone Wild ad but still, the idea is the same. No non-government network is obligated to put anything on, and they are not restricting free speech.

22. When they become monopolies, they are restricting free speech.
Edited on Thu Oct-09-08 03:24 PM by Uncle Joe
I believe when a handful of corporate conglomerates control over 90% of everything the American People see on television, read in the papers, or hear on the radio, that is perilously close to being a monopoly.

The Internet is the only relief and as one small example in the case of Murdoch taking over MySpace, they're trying to control or neutralize that free speech as well by cornering the market on music agency.

I believe network television and possibly cable even behave as a trust in price fixing for their commercials, by synchronizing advertising time. You can see it on the prime time networks "news" programs, almost simultaneously breaking for commercials. This keeps viewers from avoiding commercials by flipping to a different station, thus driving up the value and cost of the commercials. I also believe the exorbitant cost of commercials has a rotting effect on our society as a whole.

MO money MO money is all you people seem to care about anymore.

Whatever happened to EQUAL Time? Oh right, you guys got that dumped and you only do the fair and balanced thing when it suits your sponsors.

ARE you journalists and the pillars of the Fourth Estate or are you media whores bending over for the Appointed President first and the Oil Companies second?

In 2004, the swifts were allowed full access to any program while those countering the swifts were denied - including the refusal to broadcast Kerry's speech to Firefighters Convention.

The corporate media will take this tact against any Dem who threatens their fascist masters. Gore and Kerry are two voices they have feared for decades. They make no attempt at even hiding their contempt for those two patriots.

30. ALL Obama needs to do is NOT invite those reporters who ignore facts to White House briefings.
*ush did the opposite and the media shat on itself to get in line.

NOT having access to White House press briefings is a status slap in the face that a news agency can't afford to be public.

AND the reason. "Hey, if they are going to ignore the facts, they really aren't reporting the news and we have had enough 'infotainment' in the last 8 years to last a generation or two. They will get another chance, but there are basic journalistic guidelines they need to follow."

That will get FAUX spinning in its early grave.

8. I got this email earlier this morning,
Edited on Thu Oct-09-08 11:38 AM by Kajsa
and sent the email to ABC to air the ad.

I also e-mailed 'We Campaign' to try another station,
citing ABC's big move to the right.

The Democratic Debate hosted by Charlie and Snufalopagus
AND the airing of 'Path to 9/11' prove my point.

11. there
is only a finite amount of time available for ads during any specific program so there will always be a decision made on who will and won't get aired.

Personally, while I may disagree with ABC's decision, I would much rather have private/nongovernmental entities making the decision than allowing the government to control what does and does not get aired.

Those private entities own our government. Just look at the legislation passed - retroactive immunity for one - and the no bid contracts going out. The Iraq was was about profiting private entities. These private entities violate your civil rights for a simple request by the government.

Not sure how you think I would trust Bush from my other post.

18. Is this a joke, who is Business & Media Institute?
Edited on Thu Oct-09-08 12:50 PM by Uncle Joe
"ABC has hardly been a shill for global warming skepticism. The network, a division of the Walt Disney Company (NYSE:dIS), has a special planned, “Earth 2100,” set for broadcast in 2009. It warns people that civilization is poised to go the way of the Roman Empire and the Mayan civilization. A preview video for the special includes NASA’s James Hansen and the Weather Channel’s Heidi Cullen, two of the most well-known global warming scaremongers."

This paragraph has three major problems.

1. ABC is piss poor when it comes to warning the people of the looming catastrophe of global warming.

2. The bolded part of this paragraph exposes ABC for the frauds, they are, this is just public relations to them. Here we are at the height of the election season, when the American People are most empowered to effect the direction our society will take in averting what apparently ABC believes will be the collapse of civilization as we know it. This of course won't air until 2010 after the election and they won't allow commercials now when the American People can do something about it by choosing our most effective leadership!?!? On the other hand they will take commercials from the very same corporations that are primarily responsible for bringing this human tragedy about.

3. Since when did Paul Revere, or anyone logically warning of looming danger based on solid evidence become "scaremongers"? To me, "scaremonger" is akin to "Chicken Little" of the "sky is falling" fame, running around in a blind panic, not someone to be taken seriously.

This is what I mean when I say the corporate media doesn't represent the American People, they don't believe in a public good, they only care about corporations. To them, the American People are only customers to be sold a product or down the river, corporations are their clients and there is a crucial difference between the two. From this article the same seems to hold true for the "Business & Media Institute".
