Detroit Free PressDemocratic presidential candidate Barack Obama met this afternoon in East Lansing with the Free Press editorial board following his appearance at a rally on the campus of Michigan State University. Here are excerpts from the Obama interview.QUESTION: The John McCain campaign has decided to pull its staff out of Michigan and concentrate on Ohio and some other states where they think it will be more valuable. … Your reaction to that? Is it a surprise, and will we be seeing less of you in coming weeks?
OBAMA: Well, you have me and my wife in the state today, so that shows you how important we think Michigan is. I, obviously, don’t have a lot of insight into the McCain camp’s thinking. Michigan historically has been a battleground state. My view, though, has been that ultimately this election, not just in Michigan but across the country, is going to be about who can get our economy moving in a direction of long-term growth.
The recent crisis on Wall Street, I think, has amplified those concerns. There is not a state in the country where those concerns are more deeply felt than Michigan. So I think this was an environment, and continues to be an environment, in which our message of fundamental change around our tax policy, our policy for manufacturing and job creation, our policy for energy, our policy for health care and education — that fundamental change is what’s needed. I think Sen. McCain was in a difficult situation, and continues to be in a difficult situation, because his economic policies just don’t vary very much from the president’s . . .
