Palin camp clarifies extent of Iraq trip: Says she never ventured beyond Kuwait border
Source: Boston Globe

WASHINGTON - Sarah Palin's visit to Iraq in 2007 consisted of a brief stop at a border crossing between Iraq and Kuwait, the vice presidential candidate's campaign said yesterday, in the second official revision of her only trip outside North America.

Following her selection last month as John McCain's running mate, aides said Palin had traveled to Ireland, Germany, Kuwait, and Iraq to meet with members of the Alaska National Guard. During that trip she was said to have visited a "military outpost" inside Iraq. The campaign has since repeated that Palin's foreign travel included an excursion into the Iraq battle zone.

But in response to queries about the details of her trip, campaign aides and National Guard officials in Alaska said by telephone yesterday that she did not venture beyond the Kuwait-Iraq border when she visited Khabari Alawazem Crossing, also known as "K-Crossing," on July 25, 2007. Asked to clarify where she traveled in Iraq, Palin's spokeswoman, Maria Comella, confirmed that "She visited a military outpost on the other side of the Kuwait-Iraq border."

It was the second such clarification in as many weeks of the itinerary of what Palin has called "the trip of a lifetime." Earlier, the campaign acknowledged that Palin made only a refueling stop in Ireland....

Palin also told ABC that she had traveled to Mexico and Canada. Her campaign had previously mentioned a Canada visit, but not a trip to Mexico. Comella said yesterday that Palin had visited Mexico on vacation, and Canada once last year....

1. In other words ...

She lied ... again.

Her "Iraq" trip wasn't a visit to Iraq. It was a visit to Kuwait, which is near Iraq. Interesting logic this person has.

I've been to Brownsville, TX, so I'm just gonna start telling people I went to Mexico.

20. Palin's Foreign Policy Experience
Edited on Sat Sep-13-08 02:14 PM by malletgirl02
It's kind of like Alaska being the closest state to Russia as her foreign policy experience.

22. she stood in Kuwait and could see Iraq on the other side of the gate
kind of like standing on the Alaskan shore and seeing Russia on the other side.

another real, solid example of her foreign policy experience--standing and looking.

23. Ha! Yes.

Good one.

I question, though, whether she's actually stood in the limited areas of Alaska where one can see Russian territory or whether she just saw it on the TeeVee.

Lawd this person is a piece of work, but I don't know what's worse: her or the people who *know* better and try to justify her ignorance. Right-wing hacks aren't even being creative anymore. They're straight up claiming up is down, left is right, stupid is smart.

2. "clarifies extent of"
As in there was no "extent". She never went to Iraq.

The headline is trying to obfuscate the contents of the article.
A more accurate headline:
"Palin never went to Iraq: Caught in yet another lie."

15. Agreed. An extent of zero is not an extent.
It's just another lie. A big one.

3. I've had more foreign travel than she has!
And I consider myself pretty sheltered. Imagine if Hillary or Obama had counted a refueling stop in Ireland as an official visit to that country. Faux news would implode from the hysteria emitting from the airwaves.
This tiptoeing around her glaring, shocking and indefensible inexperience for the office to which she aspires is appalling. The press - all of it - needs to takes the gloves off. NOW.

29. And a refueling stop in Ireland?
I remember when I was just 15, I'd been to Europe the previous summer. If asked, I would always count Ireland among the countries I'd visited even though we only stopped for refueling or some such thing. We never left Shannon, and I claimed I'd been to Ireland!

Spinning her history like that, Palin about as mature than a young teenager!

8. Well, blue, imagine how well-travelled you would be if you counted maybe...
where you changed planes, or stopped on refueling stops, or went to a border town. This is really LOL territory.

And you're right about the press. With this added story, maybe they'll put all this together, as they have somewhat put together all of McCain's nasty ads adding up to a campaign of lying and distortion.

6. Ooooh, she's a CLARIFIER!
Edited on Sat Sep-13-08 01:08 PM by MO_Dem
She was FOR everything until she was AGAINST it
She said she went to Iraq before she said she DIDN'T go to Iraq
She said she went to Ireland before she said she DIDN'T go to Ireland
She said she went to Mexico before (stay tuned for further 'developments')
She said she went to Canada before (stay tuned, that may have only been a flyover??)
She SAID she was mayor of Wasilla?
She SAID she was a reformer?
She SAID she was FOR McCain/Palin?

I say she's a liar, before, after, and in between, and there'll be no further clarification from me!

Typos corrected on edit

14. It would be a heck of a lot easier if all McCain/Paline team statements...
went under a single "Lies and More Lies" section you could flip to for a laugh. It would save space and be much less annoying to readers. (Although I'm sure she did go to Canada to meet with the floundering TransCanada people to make that charitable multi billion dollar donation to aid the pipeline deal.)

17. Are they freaking serious?!?!?!?
Staying within the comfort confines of a friendly country like Kuwait, hardly qualifies as a trip to *> IRAQ <*.

She NEVER went to Iraq.

Going to Canada and Mexico ON VACATION is her EXPERIENCE?!?!?!?

I guess by that logic, my weekend jaunts to Tijuana clubs when I was 18-22 years old makes me an expert in Mexican governmental affairs and foreign policy.

Now, it's "a brief stop at a border crossing between Iraq and Kuwait."
