Blue Cross-Blue Shield of Michigan announced Monday that it will offer coverage to the partners of gays and lesbians who work for small businesses.

Blue Cross the is the largest health insurer in the state. In a statement, it said that it was responding "to customer demand".

The domestic partner coverage extended to the insurer's small business customers mirrors that offered to married couples. Gay and lesbian couples must prove they are in a committed relationship to qualify. It does not cover heterosexual couples in non married relationships

Does it matter that blue cross is extending this benefit if your work isn't going to extend it?

In San Francisco if a business has a conctract with the city you must receive offer domestic partnership benefits so it seems like Blue Cross had to do this in order to provide health coverage to companies who work have blue cross plans.

I don't want to be negative but I can't get medical benefits for my partner and our company's health insurance will cover domestic partners.
