DEAN CRITICIZES BILL THAT WOULD DISMANTLE HEAD START PROGRAM
Friday July 25, 2003
By: Press Office

(July 25, 2003)

IOWA CITY, IA--Governor Howard Dean, M.D. blasted a Republican-backed measure that passed the House of Representatives early this morning which seeks to dismantle the Head Start program:

"This legislation takes a giant step backward in our country's efforts to educate our neediest children and to prepare them for school and success in later life.

"This bill dismantles what is clearly one of our country's most effective education and social programs, one which has a thirty-eight year track record of success demonstrated by extensive research and study.

"This is yet another outrageous effort by the Republican Party to decimate social supports which assist the poorest and most vulnerable members of our community. In pursuit of this agenda, they have pushed the passage of a bill that allows Head Start funding to be gutted after five years. Not only that, this bill creates experimental block grants, removes federal standards, allows religious discrimination against employees and provides inadequate levels of funding in the meantime.

"Early intervention is critical to ensuring our children's success in school and in life. Instead of undermining the success of Head Start, we should be seeking to expand the program."

1. Bravo
Outrage served up hot and on time, just like we like it.
Thanks Dr. Dean.
Gouging Head Start or sending it to be funded by states, just punctures holes in a program that really works. I'm glad I caught
Loretta Sanchez's heartfelt statement on the House floor
yesterday, saying that she's one of the many successes from
the Head Start program.

Rich white men voting to gouge a good program like Head
Start just looks even meaner...

2. Thank you for taking a stand, Doc Dean!
My nephew has benefitted greatly from his participation in HeadStart and there's no way the Pukes can convince me or anybody else that this isn't a back-handed way to trying to kill the program. I got news for ya, Pukes, you mess with my family - you mess with me. Once I close on the sale of my old condo I'm cutting Dean a nice fat check (and another to my nephew for his kindergarten supplies and whatnot).

4. Send it in lumps instead of one fat check
I don't know how many quarters Matching Funds applies to come January (anyone?) -- but everything up to $250 per person will be matched for this quarter still I'm sure. You're allowed to give up to $2K per election (primary and then general), but might as well go for those Matching FUnds.

3. Note he didn't mention the 2 dems,
one of whom is an opponent in the primary race, who could have changed the vote.

5. Thirty-eight year track record of success - so let's trash it
The repukes just don't get this one. There is a whole generation that benefited greatly from Head Start and everyone knows about this program. I feel that at least for the Latino vote, they have blown this one big time.

The so-called education president, leave no child behind leader is turning out to be just the opposite - a destroyer of public education. He and his repuke friends just want to privatize public education to turn the masses into slaves for their corporate slave masters. repuke businesses will get to siphon off public monies in the privatization rape while at the same time getting tax credits for sending their kids to private schools.

Here is a good quote from a new study by the New Democrat Network
National Poll of Hispanic Voters:
"Three-quarters of all Hispanics indicate that it would “offend them a lot” if a political candidate promised to improve education but refused to adequately fund public schools after he got into office."

---------

I have the power to take my country back and damn straight I'm going to use it in '04.
Adelante Con Dean!

So
