Emirates airline said Monday it would launch nonstop service between Dubai and New York on August 1, the first service to the United States with the new Airbus A380 superjumbo.

"The United States represent a key focus area in Emirates' route development plans, and we are delighted to be the first airline to launch commercial A380 services to the continent," said Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, chairman and chief executive of the largest airline in the Middle East.

"We are confident that Emirates' customers traveling to and from North America will welcome the A380's additional space and capacity, as well as our luxurious onboard amenities which will provide a very high quality travel experience previously associated only with private jets."

Emirates has announced that it will start daily nonstop service from Los Angeles to Dubai on September 1 and from San Francisco to Dubai on October 26.

1. I'm surprised the runways are long enough. And what about getting
into the terminals? I thought this plane was too high (no pun) to use the standard docking areas.

3. They kinda take those things into consideration when they design airplanes...

Yes, the A380 is limited in the number of airports it can use, but it was designed to be able to be accommodated by the major airports.

(on edit) Some airports are also making modifications to accommodate the A380. San Fransisco needs no modifications...JFK is spending about $120M.

4. Ya think? I realize these things need to be considered which is why
I was asking. I also thought they'd be used exclusively in Asia, and places that can accommodate them. Only $120M? Pshaw! Bring 'em on. I'm still not convinced I want to fly in one of them. The bigger they are...

5. The U.S. can't afford to be cut out of the A380 market.
$120M sounds like a lot, but it's not that big a deal when you're talking about airport improvements...about the cost of 2 1/2 Boeing 737-800s.

8. Do any US airlines have any plans of buying one of these, do you know?
My DH works for an airline, and they all seem to be hanging on by their fingernails, just barely. I can't imagine what the fuel would cost to fill one of these up...

and for you if you're interested. Me, not so much, but DH gets a lot of these via my e-mail:

9. UPS, FedEx, and ILFC (International Lease Finance Corp)
A lot of airlines just lease planes, and American, Delta, and Continental lease planes from ILFC. No idea if they'll be leasing A380s from ILFC, though.

Cool video. Thanks! :)

2. WARNING!
A guy got arrested there because he had a dab of pot on the bottom of his shoe. I forgot how much it was, but it was a tiny, tiny amount. He got arrested in customs when the sniffer picked up the smell.. then they found it on his shoe. One would think it would be thrown out of court. Since he could have picked it up anywhere. But it did not.

So, if you decide to take to the friendly skys and go there. Warning, they have a strict drug policy and don't play. Some over the counter stuff here, is hard stuff there. So dont' assume your ok because your doc says you can have it. If you go, read up on all you can about the rules, etc.

Other then that, it's a nice place to visit.

6. Don't take your doobies to Dubai.
Spangle is absolutely correct. Every week somebody is getting arrested at the airport there for ridiculously tiny amounts of drugs, like .02 grams of hash, and routinely sentenced to four years in prison. Sometimes the emir pardons them after a few months or a year or two.

Dubai will also drug test you and arrest you on the basis of a positive drug test. Dude, your blood is illegal! The only other place in the world repressive enough to pull that shit is South Dakota.

7. Emirates Air is the classiest airline I have ever flown.
Very posh. They even have menus that look like the ones in fancy restaurants. Plus, the flight attendants wear weird hats.
