Clinton suspends her historic presidential bid
Source: Washington Post

By BETH FOUHY
The Associated Press
Saturday, June 7, 2008; 1:19 PM

WASHINGTON -- Hillary Rodham Clinton ended her historic campaign for the presidency on Saturday and told supporters to unite behind rival Barack Obama, closing out a race that was as grueling as it was groundbreaking.

The former first lady, who as recently as Tuesday declared herself the strongest candidate, gave Obama an unqualified endorsement and pivoted from her role as determined foe to absolute ally.

"The way to continue our fight now to accomplish the goals for which we stand is to take our energy, our passion, our energy and do all we can to help elect Barack Obama, the next president of the United States," she said in a speech before cheering supporters packed into the ornate National Building Museum, not far from the White House she longed to reign in.

"Today as I suspend my campaign, I congratulate him on the victory he has won and the extraordinary campaign he has won. I endorse him and throw my full support behind him and I ask of you to join me in working as hard for Barack Obama as you have for me," the New York senator said.

1. A GREAT speech ....
Should have been delivered Tuesday, but perhaps it took that much time to pen such a fine speech ....

THANKS Hillary .....

20. Why should it have been delivered tuesday?
Bill Bradley endorsed Al Gore 5 months after Gore was the presumptive nominee. Gore supporters did not go wild or froth at the mouth over it.

Tsongas endorsed Bill Clinton four months after he became the presumptive nominee, Clintons supporters didnt froth in rage either. Hillary's endorsement of Obama came in record time.

Grow a thick skin, otherwise you wont survive the general.

29. Blah Blah Blah ....
It is a false analogy to compare those other races to this: There was FAR more tension involved with this race ... and the timing simply would have been better IF it were given on the day that Obama crossed the line and gathered the necessary delegates to clinch the nomination: Bradley was gone FAR before then ..... Considering the nature of THIS primary race: Tuesday would have been ideal from an emotional standpoint ..... Just the fact that most here agree shows that the expectation was real, and not too outlandish to have wanted from her ....

These left handed slurs mean nothing to me .... I supported both Hillary AND Obama all the while: I support the DEMOCRATIC nominee .... I wanted an end to the ridiculous insults between the two camps

So the partisan snipes really say nothing to me, except to define the person hurling them ...

One might rightly ask exactly WHO needs a thicker skin here ..... You rushed to defend something that needed no defense ....

37. Have YOU ever lost an election?
If no then you need to get over yourself. Hillary did what she felt she needed to and int the time she needed. It's hard enough to hear from people of her own party slamming her like you everyday. She had to eat crow and go on with Obama. That could not have been easy for anyone. Least not her. Just be happy you got your way! Geesh!

40. Oh then everything rotten that she did
is just fine, eh? To be expected and excused. It was what she had to do, right? pffffft. Good, let's recommend that to the next primary contestants as the way to go, OK? It's all down the memory hole now, in spite of being the worst campaign ever she is now the white robed saviour of Obama's campaign. S Chist, stop already. I dread her going out to campaign for Obama. She has been so damaging that no belated concession speech will cover it up and Republicams have already pounced on her traitor to Democrats words. NO way will I accept this Clinton approach as being 'doing what one has to do". Obama surely did not, and he won.

Just hope she fades away. She offers us nothing but the claim that some 18 million supporters hate Obama and so she will rescue the poor Obama, support him like a rescuer and send him to the White House all on her own. It's bullcrap.

Have just a tad of compassion, please. I am an Edwards supporter. I know how it feels. Please be as gracious as a winner as you want others to be as losers. Please do your part for the party to come together and work for Obama's victory in November. Obama is going to be the candidate. There is no reason to pour salt in the wounds of others.

50. geez==I am calling it as I see it
I have more than enough compassion for any human being, but, I simply cannot set aside in my mind the tactics, the dirty tactics Hillary and Bill have indulged for themselves in this bitter campaign they launched. I will tolerate them in a lesser role, but I will never adore them to the point of blind adoration and submit to humble thankfulness for finally propelling Obama, the winner, the left behind winner,to a victory just because they have again, turned tables, as is their habit. I will never give them an accolade for pushing Obama to victory as if it were all up to them. That is just plain stupid.

82. Look. It was very close. Those who supported Hillary are
good Democrats, just as good Democrats as are you. Get off your high horse and get busy uniting the party. The time for acrimony is over. Focus on beating John McCain. Help the Hillary supporters heal and start supporting Obama. Your nasty talk makes it harder for them. Trust me as an Edwards supporter. Let go of your anger.

I'm not asking you to forget things that you feel were unjust. I am just asking you to stop focusing on your own bad feelings about those things.

79. My 'way' ....
Was to support the candidate that emerged from the primary process ....

WTF is it that you don't understand ? ... That I did NOT have a favorite candidate and supported BOTH Obama AND Clinton ? .... That Obama clinched the number of delegates required to secure the nomination on Tuesday, as expected ? ....

My 'way' was for ONE of them to win, and for ME to support that winner .... THAT was my way .....

Either way, I was gonna be happy .....

There is no crying in politics ....

Oh yeah .... I guess there is ....

Let us know when you are done crying in your beer .... Better yet : Don't tell us ....

4. Think before you type !
This speech was not only a conciliatory speech to Obama (and her first speech campaigning for him) but a speech to all her supporters so of course she went over her themes what else do you expect her to do. Her endorsement of Obama was strong and unequivocal. I don't know what speech you listened to but I thought she did everything she needed to do i.e thank those that supported her, suspend her campaign, strongly endorse Obama and remind those that followed her that they needed to go forward with Obama.

She has to "suspend" because of the FINANCIAL obligations she has! I just knew some of you would whine and be skeptical about that terminology. It never ends, the night of the election after Obama makes his victory speech we'll see someone here say something negative about Clinton.

SHE put all her support behind ALL democrats this afternoon, why can't everyone here do the same thing?

36. If Hill isn't the VP choice....... I'LL VOTE FOR McCAIN........!!!!!!!
THEY WANT HILLARY TO KISS THEIR ASSES.....!!!! WELL........ IT AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN......YOU HARDCORE FANATIC OBAMA SUPPORTERS ARE SOMETHING ELSE...... FROM THE VERY BEGINNING OF THIS CAMPAIGN, HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON HAS HAD TO ENDURE UNDUE CRITICISM FROM THE MEDIA..... FROM OPPONENTS...... FROM ANY DAMN IDIOT WHO HAD SOMETHING TO SAY ABOUT HER.... THE PRESS WAS 100 TIMES MORE CRITICAL OF HILLARY THAN OBAMA, WHO GOT A FREE PASS THROUGHOUT THE CAMPAIGN.... AFFIRMATIVE ACTION, I GUESS.....THAT WAS TOTAL BULLSHIT........!!!!!!!! SHE MORE THAN DESERVED TO WIN, HAS THE EXPERIENCE.... IT WOULD HAVE BEEN AWESOME TO HAVE BILL AS A CONSTANT ADVISER TO HANDLE THE DAY-TO-DAY PROBLEMS OF THE PRESIDENCY..... YOU KNOW, I REALLY DON'T EVEN DISLIKE OBAMA........ HE SEEMS DECENT ENOUGH......... I JUST THINK HIS WIFE, HIS EX-PASTOR, HIS BUSINESS ASSOCIATE, WHO WAS JUST RECENTLY FOUND GUILTY AND/OR SENTENCED.... ARE ALL SELF-CENTERED JACKASSES....!!! OR, MORE PRECISELY, RESPECTFULLY..... A BITCH....!!!!.... A MENTAL-CASE....!!!.... AND A CROOK....!!!!! BUT I GUESS IT'S ALL IRRELEVANT, NOW...!!! BUT I CAN ABSOLUTELY GUARANTEE, ONE THING THAT WILL HAPPEN, IF OBAMA DOESN'T CHOOSE HILL AS HIS VP...... I WILL NOT ONLY VOTE FOR McCAIN, I'LL DONATE MONEY TO HIS CAMPAIGN AND ACTIVELY CAMPAIGN FOR HIM...!!! AND I'M A LIFELONG DEMOCRAT, WHO THINKS REPUGACONS ARE IDIOTS...!!! IF THE SITUATION WAS REVERSED.......... IF HILL HAD WON AND BARRACK HAD COME IN A CLOSE SECOND, LIKE HILL, YOU WOULD HAVE DEMANDED THAT OBAMA BE THE VP CHOICE.... IF THAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED, HILL WOULD HAVE HAD ENOUGH SENSE TO CHOOSE HIM ANYWAY.... SO LET'S SEE IF OBAMA HAS ENOUGH SENSE, AND COURAGE.... TO PICK HILL AS HIS VP......... OR IS HE PETTY.... THINKS HE DOESN'T NEED HER........ AND CAVES INTO THE PRESSURE FROM HIS PETTY-ASS WIFE AND CLOSE SUPPORTERS WHO CARE MORE ABOUT THEIR EGOS THAN THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY.... WHAT'S OBAMA AND HIS ASSOCIATES AFRAID OF...??? IF BARRACK CAN'T HANDLE BILL CLINTON....... HOW CAN HE HANDLE THE PRESSURES OF THE PRESIDENCY....???? IF HILL IS NOT CHOSEN............ I'LL CHANGE MY VOTER REGISTRATION TO AN INDEPENDENT AT LEAST, TO A REPUBLICAN IF NECESSARY.....!!! AND I'LL WORK LIKE A DOG, TO SEE McCAIN ELECTED.....!!!! IF HILL IS THE VP, IT'S OBAMA ALL THE WAY....!!! I GUESS IT ALL DEPENDS ON WHETHER OR NOT BARRACK IS BIG ENOUGH TO SWALLOW HIS PRIDE AND CHOOSE HILL, OR IS HE TOO PETTY TO REALLY DO WHAT IS BEST FOR THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY AND THINK HE CAN WIN WITHOUT HER.... YEAH........ WE'LL SEE, WON'T WE.....!!!!!!!!!!???????????

41. I guess we have "Hillary Republicans" now.
What is most Republican about this kind of attitude is the overwhelming concern for people who already have it made. Hillary, NY Senator, celebrity, first lady, probably worth $100 million+. So much concern for the trials and tribulations of this 'poor soul', similar to the way Republicans show such concerned about voting to uphold the rights of the top 1%, voting against their own best interest. There is a host of other well deserving politicians out there who also have what it takes for the VP spot, are more experienced and well intentioned than Hillary, and you may not even know their names. I understand that Hillary may be the best choice to win the election, MAYBE, but the reasons you outloned for selecting her really make no sense to me.

She can't just drop out, but has to maintain an active role in this election. IF she does that, eventually more of her supporters will come around to seeing what they risk by voting McCain.

11. I think HRC will continue to . . .
play both sides . . .
She'll support Obama looking for a way to stay prominent until '12 ---
and I'm sure she's still looking for the VP slot --- but her tone/attitude seems to suggest
that either they've "suspended" considering her for now -- or indicated it's not likely.

I hope that's true because above all, I do not want to see HRC as VP --
NOR ANY DLC CANDIDATE --

On the other hand, I think we have to keep an eye on what's going on ---

22. Clinton ends historic bid, endorses Obama
Source: MSNBC

WASHINGTON - Hillary Rodham Clinton ended her historic campaign for the presidency on Saturday and told supporters to unite behind rival Barack Obama, closing out a race that was as grueling as it was groundbreaking.

The former first lady, who as recently as Tuesday declared herself the strongest candidate, gave Obama an unqualified endorsement and pivoted from her role as determined foe to absolute ally.

"The way to continue our fight now to accomplish the goals for which we stand is to take our energy, our passion, our energy and do all we can to help elect Barack Obama, the next president of the United States," she said.

Her passionate speech was delivered before cheering supporters packed into the ornate National Building Museum.

"Today as I suspend my campaign, I congratulate him on the victory he has won and the extraordinary campaign he has won. I endorse him and throw my full support behind him and I ask of you to join me in working as hard for Barack Obama as you have for me," the New York senator said.

60. You Clinton bashers.....and there are many on DU......
It takes time to concede--her "loss" was REAL close. Check your numbers. Furthermore, I just rec'd this from Obama's camp....

Sen. Barack Obama, the presumptive Democratic nominee issued the following statement:

"Obviously, I am thrilled and honored to have Senator Clinton's support. But more than that, I honor her today for the valiant and historic campaign she has run. She shattered barriers on behalf of my daughters and women everywhere, who now know that there are no limits to their dreams. And she inspired millions with her strength, courage and unyielding commitment to the cause of working Americans. Our party and our country are stronger because of the work she has done throughout her life, and I'm a better candidate for having had the privilege of competing with her in this campaign. No one knows better than Senator Clinton how desperately America and the American people need change, and I know she will continue to be in the forefront of that battle this fall and for years to come."

27. Please tell me exactly what was so "historic" about it.
She's NOT the first woman to run. She's not the first republican-lite (excuse me- "Democrat") to run. She's not even the first to run a "grueling" or "groundbreaking" campaign. And she's NOT the first to lie like a dog on a rug during the course of the run.

I just don't get it. What was supposedly so special and different about any of it? Being beaten by an African-American? Being beaten after proclaiming herself entitled? Being beaten by a better-qualified person? (Well- you may just have me on that last one- it HAS been a while since The Best One won...)

Color me unimpressed by the whole travesty. I am NOT in any way awestruck by anything she purportedly did or said that rose above the rest of it.

GObama. Get it done. We need you, and that's one thing that' never been more obvious. OR historic.

68. It's technically "suspended"...
... because of something to do with campaign debts and such. Suspending means Hillary keeps her delegates (which Obama doesn't need), but it also allows her campaign to get federal matching funds for any last minute contributions -- an important point for a campaign that's in the red.

John Edwards and Mitt Romney also "suspended" their campaigns, so Hillary doing it too is not an issue.

The only thing that John McCain had going for him was a long lasting Democratic Primary battle.
It is over and Hillary Clinton strongly supports the Democratic Nominee Barack Obama.

35. SHOCKING - ABC NEWS main story "Clinton concession leaves fractured party
I'm not joking. They are so FOX-IFIED now...

"Delayed But Gracious Clinton Exit Leaves Fractured Party
Clinton's Bid May Ultimately Be Judged By Obama's Success
ANALYSIS by RICK KLEIN
Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., conceded defeat, endorsing rival Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., but Democratic unity may be difficult to achieve after an often bitter and close race.

But the somber faces that turned out to see Clinton end her campaign -- and the scattered boos that greeted her mentions of Obama's name -- suggested the lengths to which both Clinton and Obama must go to move beyond the battles of the longest primary season in history.

The Democratic Party is, as Clinton said, "a family," but it's more often resembled "The Simpsons" than "The Waltons."

To Sen. John McCain's delight, 2008 was no exception.

The primary campaign that formally ended with Clinton's suspension of her campaign cleaved the party in two -- dividing along lines of black and white, male and female, blue-collar and white-collar."

How I hate ABC. All over the net, reporters are portrying this positively, and ABC reports it like THAT! Nice Job Rick Klein!

We are one step closer to President Barack Obama.

That must have been a very difficult speech for Sen. Clinton to deliver. One can't help but feel for her in having to having to submit so utterly and totally after such a hard-fought campaign.
