Clinton hails Obama but doesn't concede

Earlier, she said she would consider VP role to help Democrats win

updated 11 minutes ago
WASHINGTON - Democrat Hillary Clinton Tuesday hailed winning rival Barack Obama and his supporters for an extraordinary race but stopped short of recognizing his victory in the race for their party's presidential nomination.

Clinton told supporters in a speech that she would consult party leaders in coming days on how to move forward, but that, "I will be making no decisions tonight."

In a speech to supporters in New York, Clinton said it had been “an honor to contest these primaries with him." “I am so proud we stayed the course together,” she said to cheers. “I am committed to uniting our party so we move forward stronger and more ready than ever to take back the White House this November.”

But she emphasized that she had won more votes in primaries and caucuses than Obama, and she refused to say she was ending her campaign.

9. Right. Because LBJ didn't ram thru all JFK's stalled legislation in the 100 days.
And the Great Society wasn't LBJ's contribution to America.

But you're right. She shouldn't do it. No one should have to spend four years being slighted and humiliated by the Obamas and their sexist, ageist, rabid supporters.

No way should Hillary Clinton make the Vice Presidential choice easy on Obama.

And no way should we lose anyone else out of the Senate no matter how big we assume our landslide will be.

He needs to find a governor. A woman governor.

42. I feel odd about this.......
I actually prefer Obama to Hillary, although I am not convinced about him yet. I do feel like this primary was a huge screw up and I am disturbed by the way the media and many others, including and especially the "rabid Obama supporters" have handled themselves. The worst part of all is the FL, MI situation. We could have done this right in the first place by not screwing those people and I think Obama would have still got the nom. I just don't feel right about how this came about. It reminds me of the same attitudes that got us Dumbass back in 2000.

We should care that all of us are heard when it comes to picking our leaders. I would NEVER want my candidate to win at the expense of the rights of my fellow citizens. I have hope that Obama will be a great President and hope he is the great person his supporters claim to be. I just think if he truly is the kind of President/person I want as our leader would have insisted on every voter being treated equally.

Who was the moron that thought screwing with Fl and MI would not be an issue in the primary? This feels like tainted victory. I am also sick of hearing all this negative crap about the Clinton's and their supporters. I don't like HC. She is my senator, I have not been happy with her work. I do think that the way the Clinton's have been treated by the media and many here is disgusting in this context. We owe it to ourselves to rise above the kind of vitriol and most importantly we owe it to ourselves to make sure no one is ever disenfranchised in our process. Otherwise it is not legitimate. That is how I feel at this moment when I should be excited that we are on our way to getting the scumbags in office now out.

I hope Obama blows me away and is the best President ever. I will give him a chance. I wish he would have stood up for the rights of voters. If so I think I would be more optimistic. I did like what he said about HC tonight. I thought it was classy. Unfortunately his surrogates and the media have behaved much less so.

that sexist comments are beneath the message and thrust of Obama's campaign. Check your misogyny at the door Tangerine. Obama paid homage to Clinton who, as a female senator made history just as much as Obama did last night.

I don't think that calling her a sore loser is out of line, but the degrading sexual comments cross the line.

Edited on Tue Jun-03-08 10:02 PM by Baby Snooks
She is not going to be gracious. She will take it to the convention floor. And between now and then she will do anything and everything to get the superdelegates to give her the nomination.

And her supporters will support her. They, like her, really don't care about the people or about this country. All they care about is their own little agenda. The feminists. The "hard-working whites." The corporate sleazeballs. The tycoons who simply want to own a president.

She will probably destroy the Democratic Party before it's over. But the votes she costs Barack Obama will be made up by quite a few in the Republican Party who really have had enough of the Bushes and the Clintons and their oligarchy.

The American people like Barack Obama. Democrats and a growing number of Republicans.

Clinton simply refuses to acknowledge the surge she has been getting by Republicans who are crossing party lines to nominate her. These Republicans would not be there in the general election.

It's done and over with. If she keeps it up, her own supers will start abandoning her until SHE LEAVES!!!!

Edited on Wed Jun-04-08 02:21 AM by Sterling
"And her supporters will support her. They, like her, really don't care about the people or about this country."

You really think Obama supporters will be able to reach out to Republicans with the kind of crap you guys have used on HC supporters here? I have seen both sides act like assholes but seemingly DU had a giant flood of Obama band-wagoning while I had to work for the last few months.

If you guys really want this to happen, I don't just mean him winning the GE, I mean being an effective leader. You need to honor him more with the way you treat people, yes even the people you disagree with. I have this subconscious idea that Obama could be a MLK type. A great man. Maybe I am wrong. Maybe he is a puppet too. None the less, when you work to support him, try to show the same level of class he does. Let his magnanimous nature inspire you to be the better you. That will help us all be the better country we all want to be part of.

Not to be too much of a jack ass but do we have a lot of "new" and young DUers here? I am just a little disappointed given when I joined in 2002 there was a much tighter sense of unity and much more intellectual honesty here. I used to actually learn a lot from coming here. Now I just see attacking each other and by and large a general lack of real exchange of useful knowledge and opinions. There used to be some very kind and brilliant people here that helped me find the best in myself. Now I feel like taking a long cleansing showing after too much time here. What happened? Anyone?

21. Obama claims win, gets no concession
Source: cnn.com

Barack Obama claimed victory in the Democratic presidential campaign tonight. CNN projects Obama secured enough delegates to make history as the first African-American to lead a U.S. major-party ticket. But Hillary Clinton said she would make no decision on her campaign's future tonight.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- In what he called a "defining moment for our nation," Sen. Barack Obama on Tuesday became the first African-American to head the ticket of a major political party.

Obama's steady stream of superdelegate endorsements, combined with the delegates he received from Tuesday's primaries, put him past the 2,118 threshold, CNN projects.

"Tonight we mark the end of one historic journey with the beginning of another -- a journey that will bring a new and better day to America," he said.

"Tonight, I can stand before you and say that I will be the Democratic nominee for president of the United States."

It can only be called delusional. Well, that and narcissistic.

Hillary: The decision isn't yours to make. The voters made the decision, and here's what they decided: You will not be the Democratic nominee.

The only decision that was yours to make was whether or not you'd concede gracefully and allow Obama to commence the general election with your support. And in that key decision, you've failed.

Thank God it's almost over. Obama wouldn't have a chance in hell if people could see what kind of vicious nutcakes support him.
Tootle Loo. You can go out in the rain and campaign for your candidate. You can make phone calls, and correct mistatements. You can explain why Obama should be President to those who are undecided. I won't be doing it this year. I don't think you have it in you. I think you are flakey Jakes (and Jills) who do nothing more than sit at your computers and insult good Americans who run for office.

Edited on Wed Jun-04-08 03:54 AM by Sterling
I hold out hope that Obama could be a great leader. We will have to wait to see. I am stunned by how this place has sunk so low recently. Obama people IMHO are his greatest liability especially from this point on. I too do not think they have the humility to work with people they disagree with and the maturity level is even low considering the youth base that Obama pulls in.

They need to find it quick because once it is truly solid the Obama bandwagon's wheels will fall off in the media. If not before a Presidential victory then certainly after he takes office. He will be attacked from more sides than we can see coming and with more resources beyond what we saw used against Bill Clinton. If Obama people are as good at alienating potential allies as well as they seem now Obama is in for a rough ride and will be lucky to get one full term.

I think Obama seems like an very classy guy. I cannot say the same of what I have seen from his supporters.

49. I think you are right about some of the vicious attacks
but frankly, the overwhelming sentiment here is a very well reasoned anger at Hillary for not conceding tonight. I would encourage you to listen to Teddy Kennedy's concession in 1980...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydHc-ExClqw

Grace is required in a democratic process. Kennedy made that concession in an extremely graceful way. Hillary says she will make no decision tonight. But that is an insult to voters everywhere. We made the decision. She doesn't have that right. We do, and she stomped on that right. She may think that the DNC was in the wrong about the votes in Michigan and Florida, but from where a lot of us stand, she tried to play us when she chose to break the rules and campaign in those states regardless of the party's rules. Rules everyone agreed to.

Well, I don't like Clinton when she says Barack isn't a Muslim "As far as I know" while she stomps on the hearts of hardworking Muslim Americans who are thrown under the bus by an argument that discredits Obama by discrediting them.

I don't like the Clinton who downplays the Obama victory in Mississippi where the legacy of Jim Crow to this day breeds poverty and stinks of oppression. Her patronizing expectation of the Mississipi vote is duly noted.

I don't like Clinton when she voices her calculations with anecdotes about when in the race a Kennedy was killed.

I don't like Clinton when she commends McCain at the expense of her fellow fighter.

And I say this as someone who supported Hillary for quite a while. I supported her through Super Tuesday, and then, I couldn't do it anymore. Her tactics got too dark, and they threatened to sully what the democratic party has come to stand for.

I refuse to call you names, because I won't be a generalized as "one of his supporters" anymore. I'm tired of hearing that. I'd appreciate if you would quit lumping us together and calling us names too.

48. Who are you to decide what her moment is?
Personally this race has been so close and given the debacle in FL and MI I think she deserves the right to decide when to do whatever she choses to do. I hate having to defend her as I am NOT a fan. I am however a fan of the system, and have been incredibly disappointed by how it was played out this time. This was not a clean and clear primary. I think our nominee deserved better, whoever that may have been They deserved not to have any cloud of illegitimacy hanging over their nomination. We can thank the DNC for that. Good job guys!!!

51. I'm one of the voters who made the decision for her.
That's how a primary works. We choose the nominee.

And the DNC maybe should have let Michigan and Florida keep their votes, but really now...

If all of the delegates had been seated in Florida and Michigan, Obama still would have been ahead, except that the Superdelegates are in play till the election.

And he wasn't even on the ballot in Michigan!!!

Hillary bears blame too for agreeing to rules and then breaking them by keeping her name on the ballot. Michigan and Florida Democratic party bosses bear blame too for going against the schedule they were offered by the DNC knowing the consequences as they were laid out in the rules.

This is exactly why he sould not have strong armed to steal the votes that Hillary earned. It would not have made a difference anyway... and now her supporters feel cheated.

Bad decision by the rules committee. Bad choice if "unity" was the goal.

60. I honestly haven't heard that he "strong armed" anything.
I mean this with all sincerity. I'd like to know more about what you are saying. In what ways specifically did he "strong arm" and how?

56. Of course not. If she does, it ceases being about her.
What a selfish, disgusting, classless piece of dung she is.
