AHNWashington, D.C. (AHN) - A second lawmaker is calling for former White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan to testify before Congress about allegations in his memoir that the Bush Administration had relied on "propaganda" to gain support for the Iraq war.
"Mr. McClellan's allegations raise serious questions about the decisions made by the highest levels of our government - questions that need to be answered. I certainly support having Mr. McClellan provide Congress with sworn testimony on these issues," House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties Chairman Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) said in a statement to Politico on Friday.
Nadler's fellow committee member, Rep. Robert Wexler (D-FL), made a similar proposal a day earlier. "The allegations... should outrage every American and Congress must respond by initiating immediate aggressive oversight starting with an appearance by McClellan before the House Judiciary Committee. Any continued obstruction by this Administration to prevent White House officials from appearing before Congress cannot be tolerated by this Congress in the face of these shocking revelations," Wexler said in a statement posted on his website.
In his book "What Happened: Inside the Bush White House and Washington's Culture of Deception" due to be released on Monday, McClellan accuses President George Bush and top White House aides of having "confused the propaganda campaign with the high level of candor and honesty so fundamentally needed to build and then sustain public support during a time of war."
