NZ accepts asylum seekers from NauruImmigration Minister Amanda Vanstone has thanked New Zealand for accepting 20 asylum seekers who have been detained on Nauru.
New Zealand says it decided to take the group after the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) considered the asylum seekers vulnerable and in need of permanent protection.
The group includes 11 children and six Iraqi women.
Senator Vanstone says none of the asylum seekers was involved in the recent hunger strike on Nauru.
She says they have always had the choice to return home or go to another country where they have right of entry or residence.
