Gay marriage opponents vow to fight Calif. ruling

By LISA LEFF, Associated Press Writer

SAN FRANCISCO - Even as same-sex couples across California begin making plans to tie the knot, opponents are redoubling their efforts to make sure wedding bells never ring for gay couples in the nation's most populous state. A conservative group said it would ask California's Supreme Court to postpone putting its decision legalizing gay marriage into effect until after the fall election. That's when voters will likely have a chance to weigh in on a proposed amendment to California's constitution that would bar same-sex couples from getting married.

If the court does not grant the request, gay marriages could begin in California in as little as 30 days, the time it typically takes for the justices' opinions to become final. "We're obviously very disappointed in the decision," said Glen Lavy, senior counsel for the Alliance Defense Fund, which is pushing for the stay. "The remedy is a constitutional amendment."

With a stroke of a pen Thursday, the Republican-dominated court swept away decades of tradition and said there was no legally justifiable reason why the state should withhold the institution of marriage because of a couple's sexual orientation. The 4-3 opinion written by Chief Justice Ronald George said domestic partnerships that provide many of the rights and benefits of matrimony are not enough.

"In contrast to earlier times, our state now recognizes that an individual's capacity to establish a loving and long-term committed relationship with another person and responsibly to care for and raise children does not depend upon the individual's sexual orientation," George wrote for the majority in ringing language that delighted gay rights activists.

- The Universal Declaration of Human Rights states: "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. You have the same human rights as everyone else in the world, because you are a human being. These rights are inalienable - they cannot be taken away from you. Every individual, no matter who they are or where they live, should be treated with dignity."

This is what the Neanderthals of this world will never understand. Their brains simply aren't built nor do they have the capacity to extend them into this range and depth of human thought, understanding and empathy. Lacking this, they utilize ancient taboos and tribal customs of the Bronze Age to guide them. Otherwise they would be utterly lost.

And no matter how irrelelvant and nonsensical those ideas are. No matter how discriminatory nor mythical they may be. They are determined to hold on to them, lest their own irrelevancy overtake them....

2. You know, here in New England, we're still trying to recover from the Great Locust Plague of 2004!

You know, the one that happened after Massachusetts allowed
gay marriage?

And how 'bout that day when the Charles River ran red with blood?
And frogs, can I tell you about frogs?

Man, the Californians are really in for it this summer!

Republicans! Republicans hailing out of the sky and bursting
into balls of fire on the ground like so many flaming assholes!

Tesha

P.S.: That reminds me -- Mr. Tesha and I have friends whose
four year anniversary is coming up real soon now. Maybe we'll
get them a Great Locust Plague-themed card in memory of the day
they were finally allowed to get married.

10. The same thing that happened to Massachusetts when we legalized Marriage Equality will happen in CA.
California will win The World Series AND The Superbowl this year.

However, unless you give-up your Republican Governor, Arnold Gropenfuhrer, I don't think you'll win The Stanley Cup.

4. Geez, I get so sick of this!
These people will never be satisfied, will they? First the California legislature passes gay marriage laws which Arnold vetoes, and now the courts have ruled. That should be good enough for any rational person. Californians, how does the ballot process work there? If a majority votes for it, does it automatically become law, or is it subject to review? Realistically, is there a chance that this could be defeated if it was on the ballot?

7. in a bizarre way, this situation resembles the Pandora's box thingie.
For seven years, this government has been attacking our civil and constitutional rights.

Finally, the Cal SCt reverses that trend, adds rights and benefits to people who deserve nothing less, and frankly, just like Pandora found out, it will be practically and legally impossible to close that box and relock it.

It would be akin to the Federal government saying we were just joking when women's suffrage became a fact, or when the ugly yoke of slavery was finally dismantled. It won't happen.

California granted equal rights to people, and people will not allow that to change.

CONGRATS TO ALL, STRAIGHT AND GAY!

8. In their quest to do this, the "Alliance Defense Fund" will unwittingly seal the deal for good.
Every bit more that they push the issue, they'll bring it closer to the US Supremes...

14. What is wrong with these people?
Whatever it is, it's not that they are "Neanderthals." Slandering Neanderthals is an archaic bit of racism we can do without.

I'm pretty sure this is ordinary run-of-the mill homo sapien hate spew.

Laws against gay marriage are a blatantly obvious violation of civil rights, and are every bit as loathsome as any racist or sexist violations of civil rights.

During the next few weeks I'm sure this subject is going to come up in my own personal conversations, especially in church, and I know someone who opposes gay marriage is going to get a serious scolding from me they did not expect.

Anyone who does not support gay marriage should be ashamed of themselves -- they are harboring hatreds every bit as vile as racism.

15. Surprise, surprise!!!
I've always wondered if these people really do have NOTHING better to do with their time? Are their lives really so meaningless and devoid of any kind of constructive (as opposed to DESTRUCTIVE) purposes, goals, aspirations, etc.? Why do they seem not only to desire but to INSIST on spending vast amounts of time and money trying to beat down GLBT individuals at every turn instead of helping the poor and the homeless or something? I mean, really!!!!
It's almost kind of sad, really, that some people actually seem to LIVE to make other people's lives miserable. As an agnostic, I don't hold myself up as an expert on Christianity by any means but, frankly, the actions of these individuals just don't seem very "Christ-like" to me.

:nopity:
