Bush: Now is not the time to renegotiate or cancel NAFTA(economy not in recession, in slowdown )

NEW ORLEANS - President Bush, replying to criticism from Democratic presidential candidates, said Tuesday that "now is not the time to renegotiate ... or walk away from" the North American Free Trade Agreement. He also denied the U.S. was in a recession, calling it a slowdown instead.

Bush also used a joint news conference with Mexican President Felipe Calderon and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper to renew his call for Congress to pass a free-trade pact with Colombia. He said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's refusal to schedule a vote could effectively kill it this year.

"It makes no sense to me to say that Colombian goods can come into our country duty-free, yet our goods can't go into Colombia duty-free," Bush said sternly. "And yet that's the case. An agreement with Colombia would level the playing field."

Asked about the state of the U.S. economy, Bush said: "We're not in a recession. We are in a slowdown."

Bush: economy not in recession, in slowdown
53 minutes ago

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - President George W. Bush on Tuesday said the U.S. economy was not in a recession but was experiencing a slowdown.

"We're not in a recession, we're in a slowdown," Bush said at a news conference at the end of a two-day summit with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Mexican President Felipe Calderon.

Bush pointed out that the U.S. economy grew in the fourth quarter and that the statistics for the first quarter were not out yet. "But there's no question we're in a slowdown and people are concerned about it, obviously," he said.

Bush reiterated his view that taxes should not be increased, especially when the economy was showing sluggishness.

9. He's right...
We are not in a recession. We are in a depression. It's just taking awhile for everyone to realize it. Diesel hitting a projected $4+ a gallon no doubt will be the "great awakening" to the reality of the "great depression" we are in as they go to the grocery store in about a month and notice how everything they used to buy is no longer within the budget. Then the electric bill will arrive. Stock up on candles and hand fans. You may need them.

I blame Nancy Pelosi for all of this - she took the American people and what was in their best interest off the table along with impeachment.

Her attitude seems to be "let them eat cake" and the problem is no one can afford even the cake at this point.

17. Did you see the Nancy+Newt political add?
Well, that's like Scaife+Hillary, right? It makes no sense. No sense whatsoever. My gut feeling is that Pelosi lacks... err... damn, but I'm reading the posting rules and I feel sort of castrated when it comes to expressing my opinion without profanity.

This whole DU thing is taking some time for me to get used to.

Is it still OK to call Rush Limbaugh a junkie just because there is no such thing as an ex heroin addict?

14. a classic example of if I don't say it it can't be true
If Bush never says the word 'recession' to him and his supporters a recession is not happening. Just that librul press tarring his economic credentials and his legacy.

Peace; and stop fighting amongst yourselves. Bush is the enemy, not each other.
