(UK) Government defeats opposition calls for Iraq inquiry

LONDON (AFP) - Britain's Labour government defeated opposition Conservative proposals for an inquiry into the Iraq war late Tuesday, albeit with a slim majority.

Members of parliament voted 299 to 271 to reject Conservative calls for an inquiry to learn lessons from the five-year conflict, a majority of just 28, markedly lower than the government's 67-seat advantage.

During the House of Commons debate, Foreign Secretary David Miliband acknowledged that the war in Iraq, sparked by the March 2003 US-led invasion, had not gone as well as the government thought it would.

"The war itself went better than most people expected but the building of the peace afterwards has gone much worse than people expected," Miliband told MPs.

3. The Tories are the main opposition...
...even though they supported the war they can still be opportunist about this as it's the governing party who would suffer here.

Used to watch them on C-span . . . but a long time ago.

Granted Blair moved the party to the right --- is it holding without Blair?

Since the last election they have mostly been stabbing each other in the back. They are on their 3rd leader since the last general election.
