Baker Continuing Bid to Ease Iraq Debt
By Associated Press

January 19, 2004, 11:30 AM EST

WASHINGTON -- Presidential envoy James A. Baker is traveling to the Middle East to seek cooperation in reducing Iraq's crushing debt burden, the White House said.

Baker, departing Monday, will visit Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.

Baker has traveled the globe as Bush's emissary to relieve Iraq's debt burden as it seeks a democratic footing after the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime.

Japan last month agreed to cut billions of dollars of Iraqi debts and China said it would consider the idea.

3. Why did Baker go to Europe first
When two-thirds of the Iraqi debt is owed to Arab countries? He should have gone to Saudi Arabia and Kuwait first, but then they couldn't get in their French bashing. All of the reports heavily implied that France was responsible for most of the Iraqi debt, and that they were the main ones standing in the way.
