St. Paul prepares for protestors of the RNC

The city of St. Paul will begin accepting applications to protest at the Republican National Convention at the Xcel Energy Center on Monday. But those demonstrators may have to wait another two months before their applications can be approved.

Protestors said this weekend’s march on the capitol is just a fraction of the estimated 50,000 to 100,000 on their way to St. Paul to protest at the convention in September.

"We need to figure out where we are going to put them. We need to figure out housing," said organizer Anh Pham.

1. Leave it to Minnesota to make accomodations
for protesters instead of throwing them in jails. I love Minnesota.

I hope they ALL get within sight and sound of the republican convention.

7. There will be far more protestors than GOP delegates...

8. Applications to protest?
That's bullshit. What part of "Congress shall make no law <...> abridging <...> the right of the people peaceably to assemble" doesn't apply here? Hell, given that a good number of the people attending hold office, you could argue you were petitioning your government for redress.

Screw applications to protest.

12. On the local news they were discussing the plans for "free speech zones" in St. Paul
and it was mentioned that, so far, the permits only allow protesters to get about two blocks from the Xcel Center. Spokespersons for some of the groups that have applied for permits are not amused.

Oh, and last week the St. Paul police department received a new shipment of tasers - enough for every officer to have a new one.

On the bright side, several of the larger law firms in the area will be volunteering attornies for protesters arrested during the convention.

15. Good for them, volunteering lawyers.
They'll need them. Document everything - bring your video cell phones and camcorders. I have a feeling Youtube may be a bit slow. Make sure you can conceal that camera phone if they start going through the crowds for people with cameras.

11. COINTELPRO
It is a good bet that if any riots or violence breaks out, it will be orchestrated by federally employed provocateurs just as in the days of J Edgar Hoover's CONTELPRO.
