APBAGHDAD: A U.S. soldier was killed Thursday by a roadside bomb in the capital, the military reported.
The bomb exploded near the soldier's vehicle, the statement said, giving no other details. The victim's name was not given because family had not been notified.
At the end of January, meanwhile, American military deaths remained sharply lower than they were a year ago, but are up from December. The number of U.S. troop deaths in January — 37 — was one more than to November's total, and well above the 23 killed in December. At this time last year, U.S. military personnel were suffering much higher casualties, with 83 killed in January 2007.
