Planes Fly Too Close In 2 Reported Incidents
Source: AP

"CHICAGO (AP) ― Aviation officials in the Chicago area reported two more errors Friday in which airplanes flew too close to each other, but the Federal Aviation Administration said the planes were never in danger of colliding."
" "It's a cumulative thing of airplanes, airspace, not enough people ... way too many new people, overtime and cumulative fatigue," Stock said.

Controllers in the Chicago region have long said they are tired and more error-prone after having to work repeated six-day weeks due to staffing level changes.

But the FAA maintains that staffing levels are adequate despite controllers' complaints."

1. This happens far more often than you think.
Incidents like this have always happened, but they ARE more frequent since Shrub cut back on the funding and the Director he put in place at the FAA made things worse too!

I remember, back in 1985, on a flight from Pgh. to Chicago, suddenly there was a very loud engine roar that passed over our plane, at 40,000 feet! I have no idea just how close that plane was, but it was a LOT closer that is permitted!

Blame St. Ronnie for the beginning of this mess when he fired all the ATC's!

2. Not Uncommon
3.6 miles, no problem. I can sometimes read the approach plate in the other pilot's cockpit. Yes, our ATC is understaffed!

4. well ya know...
Reagan National or whatever they call National these days is the only airport I'm aware of that has the Fascist symbol (banded staffs) as architectural decorations it so perhaps having it named in his honor is a fitting reminder of where America's mistaken adventure begain to pick up steam. After all, we supposedly corrected all this crap when Nixon resigned... Back then we had the "Privacy act of 1973", oversight investigations of the cia, etc...

6. and
you had the federal pay comparability act. If Reagan had followed the law in 1981,the controllers would have gotten a 22% pay raise. Of course there would still have been a strike. Anyone can see that the equipment will never be fixed until there is a successful strike to force the issue. You wouldn't believe the things I've seen. Threats of firing for telling anyone the truth were routine.

8. Fasces are not uniquely a Fascist symbol
they were used by many governments before the Fascists and are a common feature in many American institutions.

7. In industry, lost time accidents and reportables are tracked.
A lost time accident means that someone misses work as a result. A reportable is generally bad enough to require some sort of medical treatment - a burn, a wound requiring stitches, a sprain or broken bone. Depending on the industry, there is usually a lost time accident for so many reportables, and a fatality for so many lost time accidents. The way to prevent fatalities is to prevent reportables.

We're well on the way to a disastrous mid-air collision.
