BASRA, Iraq, Dec 12 (Reuters) - Car bomb attacks
in the southern Iraqi city of Amara killed at least
26 people and wounded more than 100 on Wednesday,
a doctor in the emergency section of the city's
state-run Amara Hospital said.
Police have said three car bombs exploded in the
city, where British forces handed responsibility
for security to Iraqi forces earlier this year.

Associated PressTriple Car Bombing Strikes Southern IraqWednesday December 12, 2007 9:01 AM
BAGHDAD (AP) - Three car bombs exploded in quick
succession in the mainly Shiite southern city of
Amarah on Wednesday, causing numerous casualties,
police said.
The violence began about 10 a.m. when an explosives-
laden car parked in a garage blew up, local police
said. Another car about 50 yards away exploded
shortly afterward as people gathered to examine the
damage from the first.
The third blast occurred across the street from a
movie theater, also about 50 yards away, police said,
adding there were many casualties but the number
could not immediately be determined.
Amarah, a Shiite militia stronghold about 200 miles
southeast of Baghdad, is the provincial capital of
Maysan province, which borders Iran. Iraqi forces
took over control of security from British troops
there in April.
