MALIBU, Calif. - A fast-moving wildfire destroyed multimillion-dollar homes and spread through the canyons and hills near Malibu on Saturday, forcing hundreds of residents to flee.

At least 35 homes have been destroyed, local station KNBC-TV reported.

The blaze, feeding on brush and trees and driven by the dry Santa Ana wind, began shortly before 3:30 a.m. PT near Malibu Lake on state park land and burned roughly 1,500 acres in about five hours, said Los Angeles County fire Capt. Mike Brown.

1. We were down there earlier this month...
Everything was so tinder dry, it's no wonder these fires keep flaring up. Pray for rain.

2. Heard (on our local news/weather here in MT) CA would get Santa Ana winds again
Told Havocdad there would be fires again.

Lived there first half of my life. Know there are freaks who love to start fires when they know the wind will make the fires bad (and possibly cover their tracks). Hated the Santa Ana season for the fires.

3. Down low near the horizon in the SW I can just see the top of a HUGE
dense cloud of smoke from this fire. Amazingly, the air here is dead still. They were still having strong winds out there this AM.

I have to admit I'm happy I don't have any clients out that far. I always worry when my kitty patients are in danger.

4. Malibu Wildfire Spreading, Destroys More Than a Dozen Homes
More than 100 homes have been evacuated in Malibu as another wildfire has sparked concern for residents of the Los Angeles community as dry Santa Ana winds continue to fuel the flames.

At least 12 homes have been destroyed by the blaze that has already scorched 1,500 acres near Malibu Lake, heading down toward the Pacific coast.

Firefighters have yet to contain the wildfire as the Santa Ana winds continue to fan the rolling inferno with gusts up to 60 mph. Students at local Pepperdine University have already moved their students to a campus shelter and residents in the area have left their houses behind as they moved out ahead of the impending fires

Thankfully, it is the only fire burning right now so all the equipment can be used to fight it instead of being spread out between a number of fires.

6. Again???
Isn't there a "season" for the Santa Ana winds? It's almost December. Here in Portland everything is freezing cold. I was in Yakima last week, it was an unbelievable 16 degrees.

And still there are fires burning.

8. As much as those of us who have experienced real poverty
like to look down our long blue noses at the types who live in places like Malibu, it sucks to lose your home. Losing that means losing your whole life up to that point, nothing is left of your past but memories that fade and become unreliable with time.

I just hope everyone makes it out of this one alive.
