Bush Vows Florida Win as Protesters Recall Recount
Bush Vows Florida Win as Protesters Recall Recount

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (Reuters) - Unfazed by protesters recalling the recount battle that gave him the presidency in 2000, President Bush (news - web sites) made his first election-year visit to Florida on Thursday and vowed to win the state.

"It's great to be back in the great state of Florida. We carried it once and we're going to carry it again," Bush told the audience at a campaign fund-raiser where he added $1 million to his record-large war chest.

In Palm Beach County for the first time since it was a focal point in his disputed 2000 election victory, Bush was served a reminder of the bitter recount battle.

1. I am glad to see that the Floridians are not ready to forget
Edited on Fri Jan-09-04 05:56 AM by jamesinca
I am glad that they are not ready to move on. They need to bring this up every chance they get, they need to remind people who is behind this, Katherine Harris, because she is running for the Senate seat out of FL. They need to be reminded of the gutter that these people crawled out of to steal the election and they need to be reminded of the extream impact that it had on the minorities of FL.

2. Lets hope the voters do learn to vote this time, so they count.
I am sure that the votes that were done wrong were way over the 300 plus that got him the state. On top of that I do recall that all service mens votes were counted no matter when they voted. If I recall right we can not count on service votes as they are run through officers OK before they are sent out. With this DOD no officer would dear to send in non-Bush votes.

7. I know it sounds unpatriotic..
but the law is as the law is written. And if the law says that a mailed-in vote shall have a date on it before such a deadline, then late votes should not have been counted. The service voters knew the rules, and I would say 'boo-hoo' to them.

24. I don't think it's unpatriotic
I think it's outrageous and unamerican (rather Orwellian actually) to behave as though some peoples votes are worth more than other peoples votes.

28. Only GOPers think guys in green get a free pass on commiting crimes
If there were people in the service who knowingly sent in late ballots knowing they would be counted, they should be in teh brig and the people on the outside who helped make it happen should be in prison.

Sorry to tell you George, you lost Florida last time and you'll lose it again.

31. they'll cheat no matter what
Even if the state appears safe they will cheat just to further discourage any Dem resurgence. They'll cheat because they can. They'll cheat because even when caught there have been zero consequences.

They cheated big in 2000, switched to some other methods, some same old same old with tighter news control in 2002. Who was put in jail? What did the exposes and the wrist slapping accomplish except to change a few tools in the box? LaPore is still there along with many others in the hodge podge pickpocketing. What remedies have been enforced without suspicious strings attached? One of the few successes was keeping a convicted felon from replacing Harris, but they keep coming back with the same. Many repukes know they cheated and feel as proud as any Tammany Hall or Daley machine flack of old- but even more self-righeous and disconnected with their touted "values".

They will cheat no matter what because they only fear democracy as a natural enemy. They can't believe the suckers will support them
forever. They know the substantial majority could destroy the entire GOP at any time of awakening to reason.

The big sign of this of course is that they are running Harris as some kind of hero of theft, along with her other natural flaws and emptiness. Slap the commmoners in the face and watch them grin. If they don't, crank up the BBV.

9. Let me say...............
from first hand experience, that Florida Democrats have redoubled their efforts after the 2000 fiasco. We are working harder than can be imagined to prevent a repeat performance of that vial travesty. If we lose Florida this year, it certainly won't be from lack of effort.
When I first attended my counties Democratic Leadership Committee meeting last March, there were approximately a dozen people there.
Our headquarters now cannot hold the number of people that show up for meetings and more come each month. It's phenomenal. We're trying, believe me, and we to every man and woman, have not forgotten.

and lived and worked in one of those "redneck, ignorant" counties up until a few weeks ago. They won't be swayed by insults and yankee accents. They are coming around, in part, because it is their sons dying in the useless war in Iraq and they know they have been lied to.

There are some you just can't reach.
They are trying to count MN, but we lost Wellstone and got goofy Coleman. I don't know what they did, but we got stuck with republicans all around. Let's hope MN will return to the Demo camp. We have optical scanners and I don't think they have a way to fix them, but they probably do. What happened in FL was terrible and the rest of the country should have never settled for this silent coup.

19. Reading list on Florida: See "The Press Effect"
Kathleen Hall Jamieson and Paul Waldman published "The Press Effect" about a year ago, and it has a rather extensive section the 2000 vote in Florida and how it was reported in the press. It demolishes once and for all the myth that Bush won the state and would have won anyway.

20. Does anyone remember in 00 when Florida was first given to Gore
and some repubes threw a fit? I was watching with my family and we immediately smelled a rat. It was as if they KNEW calling Florida for Gore was wrong. They knew Jeb had taken care of business. I KNOW he didn't carry it in 00 and I hope to God the voters of FL. teach the chimp a lesson and don't give it to him again in 04. Hopefully they are wise to the ways of criminals and beat them at their own game.

Here's to hope!

I have a vivid memory of Jeb being asked about Gore's apparent victory in Florida.

He said that it was impossible, couldn't be right. Guess he knew the fix was in and something had gone wrong.

32. Hunter S. Thompson thought the same....
"There was one exact moment, in fact, when I knew for sure that Al Gore would Never be President of the United States, no matter what the experts were saying -- and that was when the whole Bush family suddenly appeared on TV and openly scoffed at the idea of Gore winning Florida. It was Nonsense, said the Candidate, Utter nonsense. ... Anybody who believed Bush had lost Florida was a Fool. The Media, all of them, were Liars & Dunces or treacherous whores trying to sabotage his victory.

"They were strong words and people said he was Bluffing. But I knew better. Of course Bush would win Florida. Losing was out of the question. Here was the whole bloody Family laughing & hooting & sneering at the dumbness of the whole world on National TV.

"The old man was the real tip-off. The leer on his face was almost frightening. It was like looking into the eyes of a tall hyena with a living sheep in its mouth. The sheep's fate was sealed, and so was Al Gore's. ... Everything since then has been political flotsam & Gibberish."

I haven't forgotten.

36. Best be ready just in case
Last time around the repugnicans descended on dade county in droves and intimidated the process. If the bush regime attempts another coup in november we HAVE to be ready. I'm putting out feelers for a possible contingency plan here:

Recall those days of yesteryear when hordes of Repugnican activists
descended on Florida to rant & rave about the vote count, the whole fiasco leading to the enthronement of the Bush regime? Recall the lack of opposing forces during those dark hours? NEVER AGAIN! We need a contingency plan. Hook your activist wagon to the PEOPLES PLEDGE OF RESISTANCE, a potential list of outraged U.S. citizens pledged to non-violent direct action for democracy in the event of another theft of a U.S. presidential election.
This is a work-in-progress, your ideas and participation are encouraged. Contact us at: <[email protected]>
Peoples Pledge of Resistance, coming soon to a search engine near you.

I am really stumped about what will come out of this in the end.

But one thing I'm sure of-- they have Florida, Texas and a few other states rigged, and so far nobody is willing to challenge them on any of their obvious and egregious crimes.
