General Mills Frozen Pizza Recall (E-Coli)
Source: ABC News/Reuter

Almost five million Totino's and Jeno's frozen pizzas with pepperoni toppings are being recalled because the pepperoni may be contaminated with E. coli, General Mills Inc said Thursday.

General Mills, which owns the Totino's and Jeno's brands, said the recall affects about 414,000 cases of pizza products currently in stores and all similar pizza products that might be in consumers' freezers. Each case contains 12 pizzas.

The possible E. coli contamination was uncovered by state and federal authorities investigating 21 E. coli-related illnesses in 10 states.

General Mills said nine of the 21 people reported having eaten Totino's or Jeno's pizza with pepperoni topping at some point before becoming ill.

1. How does one get e-coli from a 400 degree oven?
Are people just defrosting and eating without baking?

3. Of course I bought the individual size, but I have had two of the
pizzas since July. Since they didn't give the date and code, I don't know if they were of that recall period. I am elderly, have stomach problems, a hernia and intestinal problems. Since I did cook mine, for the time period and temperature, I or my son who had half, neither one got ill. So you are correct. A product has to be cooked til it is done. That usually kills all e-coli.

12. What if you touch frozen, contaminated pepperoni
and then fail to wash your hands before taking the pizza out of the oven?

Could it be transmitted that way?

4. I would think some might grab that piece of pepperoni that fell
off before baking and eat it. I know I've done it. No more.

6. ZOINKS!
I just had two earlier this week! I guess I am OK, but yes, I have had the habit of eating the frozen toppings that fall off in the package before putting it in the oven. I guess I learned my lesson on that one! :wow:

7. What about Totino's Pizza Rolls???
They're probably made from the same ingredients. They just shaped
differently.

Geez. I was in Target the other day, and in so many aisles there
were recall and safety notices about products that were pulled
from the shelves.

In the toy aisle, in the food aisles and there was even a recall on
Gerber baby food due to some choking hazard!

I liked our country better when food, toys and baby food were not
considered hazardous materials, and when we had government agencies
that actually protected US citizens from being poisoned by peanut
butter, pizza and lead-based Polly Pockets.

:scared:

14. That's what I was wondering, too. (Nephews are big fans of the pizza rolls)

And too true, regarding how ridiculous the number of recalls has become. Gotta love the Republican "voluntary" approach.

11. What do you expect?
When the head of the Food and Drug Administration is a Bush crony and their budget has been slashed by over 60%?

How many millions of pounds of contaminated US food has been allowed to escape inspection/recall and were put on the US market that we don't know about due to the lack of oversight?

resort to mexican & canadian bacon varieties, since all pepperoni-containing types were off the shelves this week.

5M pizzas recalled for possible E. Coli-----Totino's and Jeno's

Fri Nov 2, 11:25 AM ET

MINNEAPOLIS - General Mills on Thursday recalled about 5 million frozen pizzas sold nationwide under the Totino's and Jeno's labels because of possible E. coli contamination.

The problem may have come from pepperoni on pizzas produced at a General Mills plant in Ohio, the suburban Minneapolis-based company said. It said the pepperoni itself came from a separate supplier, not produced at the plant itself, but it declined to release the name of the pepperoni distributor.

The voluntary recall covers pizzas containing pepperoni that have been produced since July, when the first of 21 E. coli illnesses under investigation by state and federal authorities emerged.

Nine of the 21 people reported eating Totino's or Jeno's pizza with pepperoni topping at some point before becoming ill. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that eight of the victims have been hospitalized, and four have developed a type of kidney failure.
