Ford, UAW (closing more than the 16 factories) said to agree in principle on further job cuts

DETROIT (AP) - A person in the know says that Ford and the United Auto Workers have agreed in principle on the company's wish to further shrink its U.S. hourly work force.

That could lead to Ford closing more than the 16 factories targeted under a restructuring plan announced last year that is to be completed by 2012.

A person familiar with contract talks between Ford and the UAW says the job reductions would happen through early retirements and buyout offers.

The person says the number of cuts remains to be determined.
