Bush: Fight against extremism is crucial

By JENNIFER LOVEN, Associated Press Writer 1 hour, 11 minutes ago

RENO, Nev. - President Bush aims to inspire patience with the war Tuesday by arguing that the fight against extremists in Iraq is crucial to U.S. security and the future of a strategic, struggling region. Bush is speaking before thousands of veterans Tuesday at the American Legion convention. It his second major speech in a week devoted to an attempt to buttress support for the war.

Last week before the Veterans of Foreign Wars convention, he likened today's fight against extremism in Iraq to past conflicts in Japan, Korea and Vietnam.

On Tuesday, he plans to discuss the implications of the fight in Iraq for the broader Middle East, a global crossroads that has largely missed the democratic and economic advances seen in other parts of the world and is thus vulnerable to the rise of terrorism, said a senior administration official. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to avoid pre-empting the president.

The pair of speeches is intended to set the stage for a crucial Sept. 15 assessment of the fighting, particularly whether the additional U.S. forces that Bush ordered to Iraq in January are improving security enough to create an environment for lasting political progress. The report, required by law to be presented to Congress, also is to measure Iraq's performance on U.S. benchmarks for military and political development.

1. These folks keep dipping into the same pot for the same propaganda
they've used almost from the start.

Doesn't appear to have convinced anyone so far.

Beating a dead meme, etc.

Voters have tuned this man out. He's not relevant at all at this point. Iraq has NOT been a success. And Bush will be held accountable by history, no matter what he says to the contrary.

3. OK...

There are a lot of things that are crucial in life; however, it is how a person handles the matters that is important. Sh*t or get off the pot!:eyes:

5. Then why don't his actions match his rhetoric?
Why isn't Bush out there at his well-vetted appearances demanding that the haves and the have mores (you know, his base) get their children signed up for this crucial battle? Don't they have the most to lose if our precious way of life is ended by an extremist takeover? If the United States is conquered by radical Muslims, it seems to me that the first people who will pay the ultimate price will be those who profited so personally and handsomely from the system that will be overthrown.

When will Bush act as if what he says is true?

12. Our precious way of life is already about to be ended by an...
unelected, and illegal extremist takeover.

To the point most radical Muslims just sit by and watch the extremist neocon Junta destroy US daily since 2000.

And Congress sit by, completely muzzled... or totally complicit.

6. Yes,
I agree. We should fight extremism. Let us begin at home by impeaching the right wing cabal of faux-religious warmongers that currently resides in the white house.

7. How many people still believe any of this bullshit?
Chimp is preaching to the 28% choir who are so drunk on the kool-aid they've lost all ability to think.

The American Legion is probably one of the few places left for him to go where he won't get his ass soundly booed.

And about fighting those "extremists"....We invaded Iraq for no purpose other than to occupy their country and steal their resources until they're bled dry. Tell me again who the extremists are, chimp.

11. Here's a problem for them
Propaganda only works when mass amounts of people believe the message. I got to tell you, no one is paying attention to the Shrub. OK on DU and on that nazi site for the right we all pay close attention. But in the grand scheme of things Americans do not listen to what the President says.

I really believe, and polls back me up, that most people sort of know Bush is an idiot and a liar. It's like if you have ever had a girlfriend/boyfriend or spouse who constantly lies about stuff...after awhile you sort of don't listen to anything. You become numb to whatever is being said because you cannot tell if it is reality or not.

This will be a minority opinion on DU but I think the Shrub won't do anything. He is trying to do everything in his power to get some people's attention by beating the drum he beat for Iraq. Problem is no one is listening. I am reading Fiasco right now and the people inside the military basically think (then and now) that Bush is nuts. He has destroyed (and with the help of Rumsfeld) the American super military power. It is in shambles from the misadministration.
