U.S. says expects al Qaeda to "lash out" in Iraq

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The U.S. military expects al Qaeda
in Iraq to strike back with "spectacular attacks" after a
major offensive in and around Baghdad disrupted the
network's activities, a military spokesman said on
Wednesday.

Brigadier-General Kevin Bergner said 26 high-level al
Qaeda in Iraq leaders had been killed or captured in May
and June.

"Over the past two months our collective efforts against
the al Qaeda leadership have begun to disrupt their
networks and safe havens," Bergner told a news
conference.

"We fully expect al Qaeda in Iraq operatives to lash out
and stage spectacular attacks to reassert themselves."

There are many, many militants in Iraq shooting our soldiers and blowing people up so that we will leave. MANY of them are, as you put it, "regular citizens who just want us to leave." Still, there actually is a real presence of al Qaeda in Iraq- HOWEVER, I've read reports that they only make up about 5% of the insurgency. So I agree with you in that many higher-ups in the military (which I love and respect) are painting the insurgency with too broad a brush.
