Blair: US may back carbon deal
Source: BBC

The US may be willing to back an agreement at next month's G8 summit on cutting carbon dioxide emissions, Tony Blair has said on BBC TV.

Up to now, the Bush administration has championed voluntary agreements as an alternative to imposing binding caps. The prime minister said awareness of the issue among Americans was growing and it was possible the US will sign up to "at least the beginnings" of action.

Speaking on the BBC's Newsnight programme, Mr Blair was asked how he was going to persuade President George W Bush to agree to national impose limits on CO2. "You've got several of the states now doing it," Mr Blair said. "I can't think that there's going to be many people running for presidential office next time round in the US who aren't going to have climate change in their programme."

He added: "I think it is possible that we will see action - and at least the beginnings of that action at the G8 - I hope so. That's what I'm arguing for."

5. Yep
That may not be the gist of the headline but it is the gist of the story.

3. Blair: Pathetic to the end
How many times has Blair told us he thinks Bush is moving on emissions control? And how mant times has Bush turned round afterward and assured his oil pals there'll be no action?

So Blair leaves office with his great dream of winning BushCo to climate artion still unfulfilled while his own reputation lies in ruins along with Iraq.

What a pathetic, grovelling, stupid little creep.

9. that whole situation reminded me of Lucy pulling the football away from Charlie Brown
Blair would be insisting that Bush would do something about global warming, or about aid to Africa -- and Bush would just ignore him. At first I felt sorry for Tony, but now it's just pathetic! I doubt he's even going to get so much as a Christmas card from the White House, now that he's no longer of use to them.

4. More accurately from the headline, it appears the BFEE will start investing in diamonds
now that they have enough gold socked away.

7. What part about "NO!" don't you get, Mr. Blair?
Edited on Fri May-25-07 09:06 AM by Eugene
The latest information from Reuters says that the U.S. is firmy
opposed to anything at the G8 conference beyond agreeing to
further talks.

Yesterday: Targets still out, Bali back in G8 climate draft - Reuters

Today: U.S. rejects German climate position - G8 draft - Reuters

The U.S. refuses even to acknowledge the urgency of the problem
in the G8 climate draft, never mind a call to action. Blair may get
an agreement, but it probably won't mean much.

EDIT: Substituted updated Reuters article.

The new article says Bush does not even want to limit global
temperature rises to two degrees Celsius.
