Renzi could soon resign U.S. House seat
The Business Journal of Phoenix - 3:58 PM MST Thursday, April 26, 2007
by Mike Sunnucks
The Business Journal

U.S. Rep. Rick Renzi, R-Ariz., could soon step down in the wake of a federal investigation into his involvement in a federal land swap deal and FBI raids of an insurance agency owned by his wife.

His resignation could come as early as Friday or soon after, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Top Republicans, including U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl, have been meeting to discuss what they will do if Renzi resigns and his rural congressional seat opens up.

Republican leaders also are starting to encourage Renzi to resign, saying a prolonged investigation will hurt the party's chances of holding onto his Arizona seat, according to knowledgeable sources.

Democrats also are preparing for a Renzi exit. Cottonwood attorney Jim Ledbetter is among those being recruited by party leadership to run for Renzi's seat in a possible special election.

15. Best part
It is only 4 months into a two year term. When we had the special election out here in CA for the 50th CD, it was only a couple of months later we had a primary then a general election again. 3 elections in one year that had that seat in congress being voted on.

"It's all part of a growing ongoing investigation into corruption in defense and intelligence contracts, which already has sent former Rep. Randy “Duke” Cunningham to prison and, legal sources say, may threaten others in Congress and the CIA. "

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12634250/

So when the #1 and #3 CIA guys (Goss and Foggo) leave, and Cunningham and other GOP are looking over their shoulders, you begin to see why Bushco wanted Lam outta there.

16. And hopefully Duncan Hunter too...
Edited on Fri Apr-27-07 02:34 AM by calipendence
I'd also like to see Marcy Winograd run for Juanita Millender-McDonald's open seat... Every bit more of a progressive voice in the House helps!

25. I'll have to check out Ms. Winograd....
I'd completely forgotten about Duncan Hunter. In the case of the late Rep Millender-McDonald's seat, will there be a special election? And I'm assuming (fingers crossed) this is a safe Dem district?

27. Marcy Winograd had a good challenge to the well financed Jane Harman in the primary...
... in the neighboring district there. Many of us would have rather seen her win instead of the more corporate Ms. Harman. I'm told that Ms. Millender-McDonald's seat is a safe district. And yes, there will be a special election, since Arnold can only appoint a senate replacement, not a congress person here. That's why, unfortunately, Barbara Boxer isn't as "eligible" for being on our presidential ticket as she might have had Angelides won from a pragmatic standpoint.

36. I Pray everyday that Doolittle will American Justice will be applied
to him - Maybe Arnold could rent the feds some beds in the new 50K jails he just got legislative approval to build. Just the Congressional Republican crimminals from Calif could earn Arnie over $100K a year - Cunningham, Lewis, Doolittle. Anybody investigating Herger? Radonovich?

Renzi said that the charges were baseless and politically motivated! A witch hunt! Say it's not so that another Republican politician is lying his ass off.

9. Democrats should prepare for some "wiggle" in the voting,
perhaps involving registration, proprietary machines that count votes without you looking inside the parts or software, "accidental" misallocation of voting machines that shorts Democratic precincts, tabulation on servers whose address may change mysteriously for the day or so around the election, and which may be wirelessly accessible, physical ballots unsecured, or "secured" by one party's loyalists, use of machines that had a sleepover in the homes of one party's loyalists, the tilting of the entire fucking field by using the Justice Department to focus on somebody's "opponents" instead of the fucking law, and coming up with other crap we haven't even dreamed of.

But I actually think that the pond of scum in which Rove has practiced this kind of politics is drying up fairly rapidly, and that sunlight is doing, and will continue to do, its work.

this has to be one of the most right-wing districts in the country.

It's all rural and retired white people except for some of us hippie nut jobs in Sedona.

18. Actually...
The Democrats have a slight advantage in party registration. As far as politics goes, Flagstaff and Casa Grande are a lot like Santa Fe, NM. Ellen Simon lost 52% to 44% last election. If she had more money, she would have been much closer.

13. Do you think this means that a Dem will have a good chance for the position
Of course like someone said there must be total scrutiny of the ballots. It's hard to believe that a Reupb almost got a hold of Mark Foley's seat.

Either way there is going to be one less Repub vote for a while!!!!!!

And I hope whatever he is guilty of they charge, convict him, and sentence him to the maximum. Politicians should be held to a higher standard and that means maximum jail time IMO.

I wrote a LTTE a month ago to the Sedona Red Rock News informing them of Renzi's
connection to the USA scandal but of course the didn't print it
