More pet food made with tainted protein pulled (Doctors Foster & Smith)
Source: MSNBC/AP

Chenango Valley Pet Foods has begun voluntarily recalling pet foods manufactured with a certain shipment of rice protein concentrate, the company said Thursday.

The company, working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, was informed by Wilbur-Ellis that rice protein concentrate shipped to Chenango Valley Pet Foods may be contaminated with melamine. Melamine, an industrial chemical used to make plastics and fertilizers, may lead to illness or fatalities in animals if consumed.

The pet foods were sold to customers in Wisconsin, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania, who in turn sold the products to their customers through catalog mail orders or retail outlets.

The following dry pet foods are involved in the recall:

Doctors Foster & Smith Chicken & Brown Rice Formula Adult Lite Dog Food. It was sold in containers with net weights of 5, 12.5 and 25 lbs. with code dates best used by Jan. 24, 2009, Feb. 8, 2009, Feb. 26, 2009, April 10, 2009, and April 17, 2009.

Doctors Foster & Smith Chicken & Brown Rice Formula Adult Lite Cat Food. It was sold in containers with net weights of 3 and 7 lbs. with a code date of best used by March 13, 2009.

Lick Your Chops Lamb Meal, Rice & Egg Cat Food in packages with a net weight of 4 lbs. and a code date best used by April 29, 2008.

Bulk Chicken & Brown Rice Formula Adult Lite Dog Food sold to one consignee, SmartPak, in a 2,000-pound tote with a ship date of Feb. 9, 2007.

2. Where does this end? I keep watching the lists and so far none
of the foods I give my cat or dog has appeared. So I am sticking to my usual brand and watching the girls closely for any signs of illness.

3. Lack of good reporting
The meltdown caused by CYA corporate news reporting, with mixtures of dumb and downplay approaches has eliminated helpful discussions for inquiring minds.

Going to the Veterinarian website one gets the complete picture, not just of brands but the exact make that is recalled. Going to the manufacturer at least they spell out exactly what types(not all) are at risk. It seems very quickly to develop into a specific variety of gravy or floating chunks style of food. One would have thought that an easy caution for everyone and every brand would be: a) avoid these types of food b) find out how and why so many manufacturers are slipping in the enhanced gluten from China into these brands. The second question is something the so-called news organizations should be asking since it pertains to how American food manufacturers are acting like the blood banks who so serendipitously mixed the entire nation's blood supply so that parts could be separated and distributed en masse, ensuring the most widespread uniform method of contamination.

The Bush FDA, like the Bush FEMA meltdown can be expected to everything wrong on big and small levels despite the efforts of remaining competent scientists muzzled in the kennels along with their subjects.

Pet diet is very uniform and inescapable whereas the complex mess of the human diet lends itself to the mainline cigarette company defense of finger pointing at all other possible causes for cancer. The very next question rising slowly to the surface like a noxious gas bubble in a swamp is widespread distribution of additives nationwide(US and China at least) that makes us vulnerable.

And shades of e-voting and the "war on terror", it is not mean little individuals slipping poison into the system but both the system and the planners themselves who are a threat so huge and automatic that no single saboteur could possibly hope to match the damage done by simple error or greed.(Much less possible intentional malice by the larger entities themselves).

5. Also More Blue Buffalo, Natural Balance, Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul, Costco & more
http://www.itchmo.com/

Particullary insidious is that Blue Buffalo says they never ordered rice protein to be added to their pet food yet the manufactuer American Nutrition did so anyway. This means we can't always trust the labels to tell the turth nor the company if the subcontrator is mucking with the formula.

6. Buffalo Blue expands list to include ALL canned food and treats

ChemNutra says Menu Foods received tainted wheat gluten
from more than one source. Don't eat anything with gluten.
And...Chinese companies don't always label foods properly.
The reality of it is our foods, human and pet foods, aren't
safe and the FDA has played russian roulette with our lives.

9. It isn't just China - American Nutrition adulterated their clients food adding rice protein!
As for the FDA they are like an old toothless barkless watchdog. corporations toss it a bone to gum on while they go on their merry way.
