House Panel Weighs Subpoenas

Administration Has Ignored Oversight Requests, Chairman Says
House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Henry A. Waxman (D-Calif.) sought yesterday to pressure the Bush administration into divulging sensitive policy information, scheduling a committee vote for Wednesday on his plan to issue four subpoenas for the information.

In letters to officials at the White House, the Republican National Committee and the State Department, Waxman wrote that he scheduled the vote because he has not received documents and testimony needed for the committee's wide-ranging investigations. Although Waxman is empowered to issue the subpoenas himself, aides said the vote is designed to make clear that his effort has broad support.

"I never found it necessary to issue subpoenas to either President Bush's father's Administration or the Reagan Administration," Waxman said in a statement. "We were always able to reach an accommodation that respected our legitimate interests. I hope that will continue to be the case with this White House" and the information will be provided voluntarily.

One letter reiterated Waxman's request for Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to appear before his committee. He said Rice has repeatedly failed to explain what she knew about Iraq's alleged interest in buying uranium from Niger before the U.S. invasion of Iraq.

Waxman said he wants to examine how White House officials such as Rice, then national security adviser, used intelligence on Iraq, given what he described as Rice's erroneous statement in June 2003 that "no one . . . in our circles" was aware that the Niger evidence was based on forged foreign documents.

4. Waxman Threatens to Subpoena Card, Rice
Source: AP

WASHINGTON - If President Bush's former chief of staff can chat about the identifying of CIA agent Valerie Plame on Jon Stewart's comedy show, he can talk about it to the House oversight committee, the panel's chairman said Friday. If Andy Card refuses, the panel will vote Wednesday on whether to compel his testimony with a subpoena, said Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif.

White House Counsel Fred Fielding has declined to let Card testify.

"Mr. Fielding's position appears to be that it is appropriate for you to discuss these matters on 'The Daily Show' but not before a congressional committee," Waxman wrote to Card on Friday. "You will not be surprised to learn that I take a different view of this matter."

...

Also being considered for a subpoena on a related issue: Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Waxman wants to know what Rice knows about the administration's claim, later discredited, that Iraq sought uranium from Africa.

"I hope we can work together over the next week to schedule a voluntary appearance by you before the committee," Waxman wrote to Rice on Tuesday. "That would eliminate the need for the use of any compulsory process."

5. First we should get Gonzo fired, not because he is slime but because
he does not know how to do the job he has. Then go after the rest. If they answer "I do not seem to remember" all the time then they also get fired for incompetence. Once a couple of them lose their jobs for giving dumb answers maybe someone will start talking truth.
