Venezuela's discount oil plan draws 700 more Vermonters

About 700 more Vermont households participated in the discounted heating oil program offered by Citgo Petroleum Corp. of Venezuela this winter than last, according to the nonprofit that administers the program.

Despite the increase, fewer than 1 in 5 Vermont families, or roughly 18 percent, eligible for the program sought the oil sold at a 40 percent discount, said Brian O'Connor, vice president for communications and policy at Citizens Energy Corp.

The average participation rate of eligible households throughout the 16 states that offered the program this year is being processed, said Ashley Durmer, a Citizens Energy spokeswoman.

An estimated 10,000 Vermont households are eligible for the program. Each qualified home could receive one discounted delivery of up to 200 gallons of heating oil.

7. I was going to ask why the participation level is so low, when I read this, from

the article:

''When the program was introduced, some fuel dealers were reluctant to participate because of the involvement of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who has been a constant critic of the Bush administration.''

9. Vermont *does* have a program to reduce energy consumption

This is really "where the action is" with respect to how America is going to manage its energy situation. Every state should and will be working on a program like this, but Vermont is definitely the leader. www.efficiencyvermont.com
