Synagogue in Chicago vandalized

Vandals spray-painted "Free Palestine" and "Death to Israel" on the Ner Tamid Ezra Ha-Bonim Synagogue on the North Side of Chicago during Pessah.

According to Chicago police officer John Mirabelli, the building was spray-painted with offensive language and derogatory messages towards Jews.

"Someone wrote 'Free Palestine' on the door in Arabic writing, and 'Death to Israel,'" said Izzie Weinzweig, president of what is considered to be one of the city's more liberal synagogue. "We have been in the area for 70 years, and this is the first such incident we've had," Weinzweig added.

Jewish Federation of Chicago Executive Vice President Michael Kotzin called the act and others like it a manifestation of a spillover of anti-Israel patterns which are evident on a global scale.

1. it's too bad that so many people

seem to blame peaceful jewish communities in the US and elsewhere for the foreign policy of the governments in the Middle East. It would be like me going into a mosque and destroying it because I don't like Sharia Law in the Middle East.

It is almost as big a shame as those who claim to be progressives and can't distinguish between "Israeli Lobby" and "Jewish Lobby." In all honesty BCP, are you surprised by things like this? I am not, but then again, I get to live it.

2. And In "Progressive" Cities

There was a deadly attack at the Jewish Federation in Seattle last year. The attacks are disturbing enough, but I think more so when it happens in what is generally considered to be a progressive city. Of course, two in a year no where a trend makes.

3. I know this synagogue - it's in a very diverse neighborhood called West Rogers Park

every few blocks feels like another country. I hope/believe it's just a bunch of hoodlums who did this...
