Church Quits Plan for Ashcroft Street
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The Assemblies of God headquarters withdrew its proposal to rename a street for Springfield native and church member Attorney General John Ashcroft after some residents criticized the request.

Some people questioned whether a church should sponsor such an initiative, said the Rev. Thomas E. Trask, superintendent of the General Council of the Assemblies of God, based in the city.

We respect these concerns," Trask said. The church never made an official zoning request but suggested the change in a letter to city leaders Nov. 25.

Ashcroft did not immediately return a call Friday placed by The Associated Press to the Justice Department.

Letters to the local newspaper have expressed concerns about renaming historic streets and honoring a person whose political career is still active. They also cited Ashcroft's support of the USA Patriot Act and its potential impact on civil liberties.

Man, it frosts my cookies when concerned citizens have to burn up time and energy batting down the whack-o ideas like this. Nearly every single issue needs the same kind of concentrated effort.

1. But don't you also love when the whack-o's have to give up?
In some ways, I especially like these little local community fights because it often brings a lot of people who don't usually pay attention out into the debates.

8. The Ass of God
What people I knew in Springfield used to call that church. My brother lives in MO. He says there is one tiny redeeming feature of having Asscroft as US Atty. General - He's not in MO anymore.
