38 Die, 105 Hurt in Baghdad Market Blast

By BRIAN MURPHY
Associated Press Writer

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) -- A suicide car bomber turned a venerable book market into a deadly inferno and gunmen targeted Shiite pilgrims Monday as suspected Sunni insurgents brought major bloodshed back into the lap of their main Shiite rivals. At least 38 people died in the blast and seven pilgrims were killed.

The violence - after a relative three-day lull in Baghdad - was seen as another salvo in the Sunni extremist campaign to provoke a sectarian civil war that could tear apart the Shiite-led government and erase Washington's plans for Iraq.

The Shiite Mahdi Army militia has so far resisted full-scale retaliation through a combination of self-interest and intense government pressure. But the militia's leader, the radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, is now being cornered in new ways that have put him on the defensive.

3. There's probably a lot more than that one they are reporting
every day. Once in a while somebody slips and admits that there are dozens of these bombs every day.

15. Bush has no trouble sleeping. He gets off on
violence and death. 2001 was a "fabulous year." He said so, himself, not long after 9/11.

6. Just a quick condemation of the butchers that
bomb book markets, vegetable markets, schools, etc. Whether the bombers are Weresistance fighters employing brutal tactics, civil warriors just out to kill the "other" guys, or terrorists pursuing some anti-Western agenda, they deserve condemnation. Bush, by creating the conditions in which these idiots can thrive, shares guilt for the carnage with them.

We need to withdraw to save our troops and because we have no business being there. I don't think that will reduce the suffering of the Iraqi population, but there is not much we can do about that. One side or the other will have to "win" before the daily chaos will come to an end. Unfortunately, that may mean a government as ruthless as Saddam or the Taliban in order to restore peace.

So he is seeing what the brass want to show him. Otherwise, he would not be safe.
