Top police official in Baquba detained, accused of involvement in sectarian violence
BAGHDAD (CNN) -- A senior Iraqi police official in Baquba suspected of being the leader of "illegally armed groups" and involved in sectarian violence was detained by Iraqi and U.S. troops, the U.S. military said.

The arrest was made Wednesday in the official's office building -- next to the government center in Baquba, the military said in a statement Thursday. Baquba is the capital of Diyala province, a mixed locality that has long been a hotbed of violence. The military did not say whether the official was Sunni, Shiite or Kurdish.

"Credible intelligence indicates the suspect uses his position to provide cover for his alleged involvement in the murder, torture, kidnapping and sectarian violence of Iraqi citizens in Diyala province," the military said.
