BBC (Tuesday): Deaths mount in Liberian capital
From the BBC Online
Dated Tuesday July 22

Deaths mount in Liberian capital

Shelling and fierce fighting have resumed in Liberia's capital for a fourth day, as warnings grow of a humanitarian disaster.
Liberian rebels are clashing with forces loyal to President Charles Taylor in the port area of the city in what is the third battle for the capital in two months.
Defence Minister Daniel Chea says at least 600 people have been killed in recent clashes, but humanitarian workers have so far confirmed only about 100 deaths.
Meanwhile, West African leaders have been gathering in the Senegalese capital, Dakar, to discuss Liberian Government calls for the urgent deployment of a peacekeeping force.
United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan has urged West African nations and the United States to take decisive action to stem the bloodshed which has engulfed Liberia since a peace process broke down earlier this month.

Bush was so anxious to go into Iraq when the world wanted him to stay out. Why is he so hesitant to go into Liberia when the world cries for help?

1. Interesting poll in AOL
Those AOL subscriber polls usually swing pretty heavily rah-rah, red white and blue. So it's not surprising that before Iraq they ran about 80% gungho and most favored the preemptive liberation purely on humanitarian grounds, WMDs or not. Odd then that in today's poll, which asks "Should We Send Troops to Liberia?", where at least 600 died last night, that that only 23% agree and some 59% believe we should stay out of it.
