Gallup: Most Americans Want Congress to Go Beyond Non-Binding Vote on War

NEW YORK -- A new Gallup Poll released today -- as a landmark debate on the Iraq war begins in the House of Representatives -- finds that most Americans favor congressional action for a cap on, and then withdrawal of, troops. They are less excited about the current nonbinding resolution against a "surge."

Still, 6 out of 10 oppose the "surge" in troops.

"Many Americans say that their congressional representative's position on the war will be an important factor in their congressional vote next year," Gallup reports, "but most do not know what their representative's position on the troop surge is."

Given a list of options, 63% opted for the cap and withdrawal by the end of next year. Some 51% backed the anti-surge resolution. Fewer, 4 in 10, want to cut off funds for the surge.

Surprisingly, 64% said they did not know what their representative's stand on the surge is -- but 42% said his or her position on the war would be a major factor in next year's vote for re-election....

1. Indeed, the Democrats should start pushing some measures with teeth
Nonbinding resolutions feel good, but they are no substitute for actually ending the war.

4. A poll on Bush's dictatorial "surge" that doesn't include impeachment. . .
Edited on Tue Feb-13-07 02:22 PM by pat_k
. . .is a poll that does little except advance the anti-impeachment agenda. Failing to offer the Number 1 and most obvious way to rid ourselves of insanity of Bush and Cheney is tantamount to propaganda. Whether intentional or not, it maintains the lie that impeachment is outside the realm of possibility -- a very effective way to suppress the public's will to impeach.

The election was NOT "all about" the war.

It was "all about" BUSH.

Americans are rightfully ambivalent about how to extract ourselves from Iraq. A quagmire is by definition a predicament from which there is no "good" way out. Only one thing is certain. As long as we leave the massive power of the American presidency in Bush's hands, doors of opportunity that would be open to a legitimate president will remain firmly shut.

There may be no good way out of Iraq, but fortunately for the nation, the way out of Bush World is right in front of our noses: Impeachment.

Impeachment is not only within the realm of possibility, when the Constitution is under attack from within, it is the ONLY effective weapon in the Congressional arsenal.

The election was overwhelmingly about stopping Bush. Every single polls tells us that. All the sqwawking and polling that assumes it was all about "stopping the war" is just an attempt to shuttle the outrage at Bush into the safe and familiar "Anti-War" bucket. The parrots love that bucket. What better topic than a quagmire? What better way to feed the 24 hour "news" beast than endless debate about the inescapable rathole and speculation about what impotent action the Congress will attempt next. It's almost as good as the meaningless fluff of the "horserace."

5. Democrats have stated more than once that this is "the first step."
It's nice to know that the people are with us on this, finally.
