By Doug Cunningham
The Teamsters are fighting a move by Allied Holdings to throw out union contracts. The nation‘s largest carhaul company is in bankruptcy court. In bankruptcy court this week the Teamsters will be arguing against the motion by Allied to throw out union contracts. But the union is also preparing its members to “take appropriate action” should federal bankruptcy Judge C. Ray Mullins rip up their contract. For weeks the Teamsters have bee ntalking with Allied about wage, benefit and work rule concessions. Fred Zuckerman, Teamsters National Carhaul Director, says this move to have the bankruptcy court void the union contracts shows Allied was never serious about negotiating. All 60 Teamsters locals at Allied have authorized the union to strike if the contracts are voided. Allied wants harsh cuts that include ending the Teamsters health and pension plans.
