Blair Faces New Split with Bush (Saddam death penalty)
Edited on Mon Dec-15-03 06:21 AM by DeepModem Mom
London Evening Standard:

Celebrations in London and Washington over the capture of Saddam Hussein today gave way to hard political thinking - and a potential split between Tony Blair and George Bush.

The Prime Minister's envoy in Iraq, Sir Jeremy Greenstock, warned that Britain would have no part in any trial which could lead to the death penalty.

The US is expected to demand just such a process, with backing already emerging from the Australian premier and other hard-liners.

Mr Blair and President Bush were expected to discuss in detail how, when and where the former dictator should be brought to trial.

2. This could be the big split
People in the US don't realise how barbaric Europe thinks the death penalty is. There's no way Blair can go along with this.

5. since when has Bush paid attention to what any country says?
or what the people are saying for that matter?

according to Bush* - the UN is irrelevant, and his latest comment regarding needing a lawyer to contend with international law just shows his hubris...

his response to objections over the death penalty for saddam was probably to say "F**k Europe - they don't vote for me anyways..."

ennywhoooo-Bush is probably very upset that drawing&quartering is considered cruel and unusual punishment

4. Sky News London commentator calling for international...
overseeing of trial. Asked by anchor about advantage of Iraqis being able to conduct trial themselves, replies that trial must be seen as legitimate by entire region --

7.  how dare the gutless Deputy Sheriff Howard say Australia
wants the death penalty..the vast majority of Australians have always opposed the death penalty and abolished it at referendum.

This creep Howard is getting as Imperial as the Emperor Bush.

11. Ahh John Keegan again
When Daniel Pipes was having trouble getting elected to that Peace organisation a while back John Keegan was a co-signatory of a letter of support.

12. I've got to admit...
John Keegan is something of a loony. Nonetheless, there are those that might agree with his tripe, our PM among them.

9. Blair should just assume the position.
Bush will laugh his ass off about this and then mock Blair's concern about executing Saddam. Think Karla Fay Tucker.
