State's 'Frozen Road Law' Takes Effect
Program Began In 1983

UPDATED: 3:25 pm CST January 22, 2007

MADISON, Wis. -- Wisconsin's so-called "frozen road law" is taking effect on Monday.

That's the latest date since the program began in 1983 allowing trucks transporting logs, salt or sand to carry heavier loads because frozen roads can bear more weight.

The state Department of Transportation's frozen road declaration normally is in effect from mid-December to late February or early March. But it's been delayed this year due to warmer weather.

The DOT monitors frost depths under the state highways using 33 frost tubes scattered around the state and temperature probes at 58 weather stations.
