US lawmakers demand Bush ask Congress before invading Iran

WASHINGTON (AFP) - A resolution introduced in the US House of Representatives
calls on President George W. Bush to obtain approval from Congress before using
military force against Iran.

The bill, introduced by longtime Iraq war critic Walter Jones, a Republican, and
five other US lawmakers calls on the president obtain authorization for an attack
on Iran, unless the United States or US interests are attacked first.

Supporters said the legislation would prevent the United States from becoming
embroiled in another intractable war like the one raging in Iraq.

"Congress will not stand by idly -- it won't be railroaded into another war that will
only make America and the world less safe," Democratic Representative Martin
Meehan said at a press conference Thursday.

US lawmakers demand Bush ask Congress before attacking Iran

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US lawmakers demanded
President George W. Bush win approval from Congress before using military force against
Iran, even as officials again denied that any attacks are on the cards.

Legislation calling on President George W. Bush to obtain congressional backing before any military strike against Iran was put to the US House of Representatives as Defense Secretary Robert Gates visited the Middle East seeking to line up support against Tehran.

The resolution by a half dozen Republican and Democratic lawmakers was meant to prevent the United States from becoming embroiled in another intractable war like the one raging in
Iraq.

"Congress will not stand by idly -- it won't be railroaded into another war that will only make America and the world less safe," Democratic Representative Martin Meehan, one of the bill's authors, said at a press conference Thursday.

2. I can't take it anymore.
This is all too much - I am very frightened.

It's inevitable, isn't it? He's going to do as he pleases.
This is so horrible.

3. Is it me or is this ass-backward? Shouldn't the President try to convince Congress
to use military force?

The "responding to an attack" didn't work with Iraq and it certainly won't work with Iran.

4. How many more nations will George W. bUsh threaten & invade?
How many more before we can point out the FACT that wars of aggression, a la HITLER, are "the supreme crime" and make us no better than any other nation (ie Germany) who commit "the supreme crime" of wars of aggression?

And when will the world decide no more appeasement?

5. I'm sure Bush will consider their demand carefully
While he waits for a Gulf of Tonkin type incident.
