Saddam likely to be buried in secret - official(will not give body to daughter)
BAGHDAD, Dec 30 (Reuters) - Saddam Hussein will probably be buried secretly in Iraq after the government rejected a request by the ousted president's family to hand them the body, an aide for Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki said on Saturday.

"The body of Saddam Hussein will most probably be buried in a secret place in Iraq," Sami al-Askari, a political ally of Maliki, told Reuters.

Asked whether the body would be given to Saddam's daughter or his family, he answered: "No."

Saddam's daughter Raghd, in exile in Jordan, wants her father buried in Yemen, a source close to the family said.

1. And yet, I seem to remember...........
..last night on CNN some dude going on and on about how the body of Saddam will be given to the daughter because Saddam's body belongs to the family not the Government. They said it was customary to give the deceased over to the familyfor burial as they see fit and where they see fit.
What's changed?

9. You remember correctly
I recall that converstaion too - we had your CNN for a change instead of our usual International "aka bit more truthful" version.

Not handing the body over to the family may have even greater future reprocussions.

4. What are the covering up?
What would be the reason they don't want the family to have the body? Why are they going to bury his body in a secret grave?

Too much suspicion there.

5. Perhaps we executed a double?
Certainly there are people willing to die for a cause in that region. Maybe we just don't want anybody taking DNA samples from the body.

14. Were there any witnesses to this execution?
What purpose is to be served by making the burial location secret? By denying the family the right to the body?

You're right, too many unanswered questions.

6. Seems as if Maliki and the US are doing the same deeds that...
Saddam was accused of. A hasty execution, secret burial and killing insurgents going against the government. I don't see much difference between them and Saddam.

11. This will piss off the freepers
After all, they have all these grotesque fantasies of wrapping the body in bacon, and pissing on it, letting dogs eat it, blah blah blah.

15. "Something's rotten in the state of Denmark"
Or rather, Iraq. This action will only bring on suspicions among Iraqis that it really wasn't Hussein who was executed. Hmmm.

18. The secret burial
is probably to prevent his grave from becoming a shrine. If the news accounts are correct, Saddam did all the right things to mark his death as a martyrdom--he refused the hood, mocked his enemies and died bravely with the Islamic declaration of faith on his lips.

Mind you, that doesn't make him any less a terrible man, but it does make him a good propagandist. He's set himself up as a national hero for a liberation movement and a focus for resistance. As such, he's a whole lot more dangerous than he was 24 hours ago.

of his martyrdom.

Case in point: when the US had Augusto Sandino murdered by their henchman Somoza, they made sure his body was never found. But the legendary guerrilla leader returned back, in the from of the Sandinistas and the Nicaraguan leftist political movement. Sandino disappeared somewhere in Nicaragua, but he came back 50 years later in full force to haunt the ever-reactionary USA. Perhaps forever.

It wouldn't be hard to imagine an anti-American "Hussein-ista" guerrilla army forming in Iraq in the near future. Granted, it already exists in the Iraqi Baath Socialist party, and no doubt its forces will be bolstered by Saddam's heroic death at the gallows.

Iran may be cheering the hanging, but they don't seem to realize that the shoe could have fit them just as easily, the US would be happy to put all the Iranian leaders on trial and into the gallows for some whimsical charge, if the US only had the chance and opportunity to make an invasion into Tehran. They should at least thank Saddam for keeping the Pentagon tied down in Iraq for the foreseeable future.
