Update - CNN corresponent now says "number of bodies on the ground." Also says this might not be a terrorist attack but a criminal attack? Evidently, there's a money exchanging bank in the building.

Update - Witnesses saw "major underworld crime figure" enter the money exchange shortly before the blast...

<TEL AVIV, Israel - An explosion at a Tel Aviv coffee shop on Thursday afternoon killed three people, police sources said. Emergency workers said at least 10 were wounded in the blast.


"We know there is an explosion and there are people hurt," Yossi Sedbone, police chief of Tel Aviv, told Israel Radio.

The explosion took place during lunchtime at a popular coffee shop in a busy business district.

The explosion, if a bombing, would be the first major attack on Israeli civilians since the bombing of a restaurant in the northern Israeli city of Haifa in October, which killed 21 people.>

At least two people were killed Thursday afternoon and 16 were injured in an explosion on Yehuda Halevy street in Tel Aviv in an apparent attempt on the life of underworld figure Ze'ev Rosenstein.


The explosion took place inside a foreign currency exchange booth, close to a busy intersection.

Police believe that the blast was criminally motivated due to the fact that underworld figure Rosenstein was lightly hurt in the explosion as well as one of his bodyguards.

TEL AVIV (Reuters) - An Israeli gangland bombing that initially raised fears of a Palestinian suicide attack killed three people and wounded more than 19 others on Thursday at a money-changer's shop on a busy Tel Aviv street.

Zeev Rosenstein, who has survived four underworld attacks since 1996, was slightly wounded in the blast that blew out windows on busy Yehuda Halevy street in Israel's business capital.

"We are declaring war against the underworld -- and this will be a war we will win," national police commissioner Shlomo Aharonishky told reporters after Thursday's blast.

In scenes reminiscent of suicide bombings that have killed hundreds of Israelis in three years of violence, ambulances raced to the area and radio stations interrupted their regular broadcasts to report on the explosion.

"The target of the criminal attack was Zeev Rosenstein and the blast occurred when he left the shop," said Tel Aviv police district commander Yossi Sedbon. "He was injured along with his bodyguards."
