AP: Schmidt Wins

There may be about 6,600 provisional ballots still out there, but a 3,220-vote lead for Jean Schmidt as of 4 p.m. Tuesday was enough to convince the Associated Press to call the race.

But not enough, apparently, for Democrat Victoria Wulsin, who still refuses to concede.

Contacted by the Enquirer a second time Tuesday afternoon, moments after AP called the race for Schmidt, Wulsin said she wanted to wait to see what happens in Hamilton County, where elections officials are still in the process of counting about 4,000 2nd District provisional ballots.

But let's do the math: Wulsin would have to take about 72 percent of the outstanding votes in Hamilton, Clermont and Scioto counties to overtake Schmidt and about 67.5 percent to force an automatic recount.

8. I'm with you, I don't think the Dem should give in with all those absentee ballots still uncounted
Just remember, this is still Ohio.

12. No Democrat should EVER concede any election nowadays.
There is almost no election in the US that anybody could have confidence in no matter who wins. The only difference between candidates should be whether you believe that counting votes in total secrecy without verification constitutes a valid vote count. I don't believe it does and I believe that in most cases the Dem suffers because the machines are made to steal elections NOT COUNT VOTES.

On the surface at least, there's no more reason to believe the results of the recent election than there is to believe that Roy Barnes lost by 5 points on Diebold touchscreens without even the possibility of verification after leading by as much as 11 points and winning every pre-election poll that was taken.

It's my hope that no candidate, Repub or Dem, ever concedes an election as long as these maliciously programmed machines are doing the counting.

2. I'm kind of hoping Schmidthead wins. So we can hold her to her promise...
to let us dump toxic and radioactive waste in her district.

4. Which is why they DESERVE to be host to the toxic and radioactive waste
In fact, if the deal goes through, I plan to scour my house for anything toxic that needs special disposal, and see to it that it gets shipped to Ohio.

I'll also start a local toxic waste clean-up drive of hazardous sites in my state, and try to get the dangerous material shipped to Schmidtland for dumping.

I may even invest in chemical manufacturing companies, just so I can get a seat at the stockholders' meetings, and propose dumping toxic waste in Schmidtland.

14. Well gee, THANKS!
But if those of you who are so ready to ship your toxic waste fo Mean Jean's proposed dump site would take a moment to educate yourselves as to the demographics of her district, you'd discover that the place she proposes to dump that waste is in Pike County, one of the eastern Appalachian counties of D2 which have voted overwhelmingly for her democratic opponent in the last two elections. It's poor, it's rural, and they hate her fucking guts, but the votes of us Appalachian folk always get cancelled out by the assholes to our west. Of course she'd love nothing better than to dump nuclear waste on our asses for voting democratic. As to the neofascists in Cincinnati, Pike County might as well be Afghanistan, so they don't give a shit. It's not in their backyard, so what do they care?

Please peruse my journal for the FACTS before you turn that shotgun condemnation in our direction.

13. Maybe you ought to rethink that
I'm sick and tired of ignorant statements like the one you just posted.

Jean Schmidt isn't proposing to dump nuclear waste anywhere near HER home -- she's proposing to dump it in very poor and blue Pike County, one of the Appalachian counties in the eastern part of her district which have twice OVERWHELMINGLY voted for her democratic opponent. So thank you very much -- but those of us in Scioto and Pike County don't appreciate being lumped in with the neofascist dunderheads in Cincinnati. If you want the facts and figures, please feel free to peruse my journal.

Schmidt would love nothing more than to punish the Appalachian folks in her district for their show of non-support. I see there are too many right here on DU willing to encourage her in that effort.

10. The people who voted for her
Deserve what they get- though of course, folks like that are always the first to complain and whine and cry. It's a pattern- and I suppose we might all learn what not to do from what's gone on in Ohio.

15. oh, well if the AP called it, why bother counting votes anymore...
i mean, if the media says it, it must be true. :eyes:

here's my thoughts. suck it AP, it ain't over until every last vote is counted. that's how it works in a real democratic election. maybe one day america will have them...

this early media declaration of election victors always pissed me off. i believe there should be a week moratorium or more on media proclamations of who wins what after an election. i'm sick of this corporate media pressure for candidates to concede, thus disenfranchising voters who vote provisional, etc, just so some fucking shmoe can feel "up to date" and "no longer anxious" when he reads the morning paper. screw that noise; votes count, and it ain't over til it's counted.

newsflash. vote in OH still ain't decided 'cuz they still got votes to count. maybe if we hold them to honesty and honor they might do the right thing and count 'em... oh, and AP had fluff to hock so that it's slave drivers have something to sell to other newspaper noise machines so there's something marginally distracting between all the precious advertisements. get your latest media slop, fresh off the presses! fresh slop, and lies! get your latest media slop!

:eyes:

16. This is a lesson to EVERY Democratic candidate: only concede AFTER the counting
The republicans taught us the other half in 2000 and 2004: declare victory as soon as the first returns are in.

20. she had not conceded as of last night
what bothers me is that so many people voted absentee because they were told to do so to avoid the mahcines... then their votes didn't get counted.

Or maybe they did. i don't know, but I know a lot of lefties voted this way, so a larger percentage of them could easily be for Wulsin.

I live in the neighboring district, so it's not even my Representative, but I can't stand this woman and cannot fathom how anyone could support her. Seriously.

22. I had no choice, I voted from overseas, and I had to
jump through hoops to even get to vote, vote from overseas site was a joke! And then, the jerks in Warren Co. pulled a fast one on the ballot, every candidate was listed alpha, with the Dem first -- until one of the races, suddenly it wasn't alpha anymore and the CON was listed first. I didn't read before I filled the oval. :(

Warren Co. BOE offered to redo my ballot for me, to which I said NO THANKS!! Schmidt is a real P.O.S., she needs to go.

She insults a war hero on the floor of the House and campaigns on storing nuclear waste in her district. Bright bunch out there.

23. I think Bush got around 65% in this district
It's that type of nutty place.

There is actually no reason at all it should be competitive, very safe Repuke seat. The fact that the GOP had to spend millions to get Schmidt 50.5% is quite telling.
