Rome's Ciampino airport closed after bomb threat

ROME (Reuters) - Rome's second-largest airport, Ciampino, was ordered closed to all traffic on Tuesday following an anonymous telephone call claiming that a bomb was on board a cargo flight, airport officials said.

Flights were being rerouted to the city's larger Fiumicino airport after the closure, just before 9 a.m (0800 GMT), they said.

Ciampino airport is primarily used by low-cost airlines, charter flights and private aircraft. It is also the closest to Rome's centre.

1. I just returned from Rome

flying out of LDV Friday to JFK.

I was wondering why there were these uniformed guards around the city cradling automatic rifles and watching passersby intently. I thought Rome was safe because Italy hadn't been particularly helpful to Bush in Iraq, but locals said that Rome was very safety conscious about a terrorist attack, just because it is such an important European capital city. It's interesting because you don't see such armed guards in New York (Rome reminded me of NYC only with Vespas).

It was a very disconcerting scene...
