FORMER US vice-president Al Gore has named John Howard as a potential global powerbroker who could force the US to slash its carbon dioxide emissions in a decisive blow against climate change.
The Prime Minister's call for a new Kyoto-style pact to reduce emissions could mark a crucial point in the fight against global warming, said Mr Gore, the world's most prominent climate-change campaigner.
If Mr Howard was serious, he could be uniquely placed to bring the US - the world's biggest emitter of carbon dioxide - with him to the global bargaining table.

"I sincerely believe that if Australia, having been the only hold-out alongside the United States, joined the rest of the world community immediately, the pressure on Bush and Cheney would be enormous, just enormous," (Gore) said.
