LAT: Southern California temperatures hit record highs
Southland temperatures hit record highs
By Jesus Sanchez, Times Staff Writer
November 6, 2006

A burst of super-heated Santa Ana winds pushed temperatures to record highs across the Los Angeles Basin and beach areas today, and forecasters predicted another day of unusually hot and dry weather before cooler conditions arrive.

The thermometer in downtown Los Angeles rose past the day's previously record high — 92 degrees set in 1898 — as it hit 95 degrees at 1 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

Record highs were also reported at Los Angeles International Airport — 91 degrees — and in Long Beach at 92 degrees.

Hot and dry winds that triggered red flag warnings across the regions weakened this morning but established the conditions for record-breaking heat, particularly along the coast. In fact, inland communities such as Burbank, where the temperature stood at 87 degrees at 1 p.m., were actually cooler than along the coast, said Stuart Seto, a specialist with the weather service in Oxnard.

However, while the heat may have peaked along the coast today, temperatures are expected to continue rising inland this afternoon but should fall short of setting records, he said....

1. This happens every year. Santa Ana winds from the desert blow west toward the sea.
This is not global warming if that's what you are thinking.

10. But usually not this late in the year.
This kind of Santa Ana heat usually wears itself out by mid-October. This is record-breaking heat.

So, I don't know that it isn't indicative of climate change.

3. It was quite hot today - probably 95-100 here in the San
Fernando Valley. I'm in Woodland Hills, which is Los Angeles County's hot spot, having blown records out of the water thia past July with 119.

6. Well, my Spring bulbs started coming up
and my cool-weather flowers died. Oh well, I can't complain. Last year one of the fires got very, very close to us. All I think about are the 5 firefighters that died last week. R.I.P. you brave, brave souls.

8. It was a bit crispy in the Santa Barbara area, too. Hope the Santa Anas let up soon
It's fire weather. I'm thinking about those firefighters, too. We owe them so much.
