CNN: Laura Bush: My husband never misled about Iraq
Laura Bush: My husband never misled about Iraq
October 26, 2006
From Ed Henry
CNN Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- In her first public comments about Bob Woodward's explosive book "State of Denial," first lady Laura Bush sharply denied claims in the book that her husband has misled the public about the level of violence in Iraq.

"Absolutely I think that is wrong," Bush said in an exclusive interview with CNN Wednesday. "Of course, the president has been frank from the very very first speech he gave to the country after the September 11 attacks, talking about this is a long war, this is a very difficult war.

"It's a different war than our country has ever faced. The enemy can make a big show on television like they did for the bloody last month we had in Iraq by blowing themselves up a lot of times along with other people. But our success is not so easy to see. But the fact is that we are succeeding."

The first lady also bristled when asked about Woodward's suggestion that she privately supported an effort by then-White House Chief of Staff Andy Card to push out Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

"Andy Card also went onto television and said that's not true," she said. "And let me just say the one thing about that book. Those 'quotes' of mine are in quotes and the author didn't call me and fact check, and it just didn't happen."...

31. Not trying to derail
but why do they call her Pickles? The only other "Pickles" I can remember is Buddy's reference to Sally from the Dick Van Dyke Show. This always seemed more of a term of endearment.

Back to Laura (damn, another character from the show). If I see her drinking a nice refreshing glass of water, or coveting walnuts, I'll know she is an alien for sure!

83. Well, supposedly she wasn't drunk at the time she ran the stop sign
She still walked, though, back in 1963.

Mike Malloy always calls her "Pickles". I figured it was from either a) drinking, or b) her facial expression (sour)

20. That's their talking point.
They all say that the insurgents are killing people as a propaganda campaign to get gory pictures on American TV and make it look like Dubya is losing the war.

For one thing, American TV does not show gory pictures. No one has seen these pictures.

How is it that different from Vietnam?

In terms of pure numbers, or TV coverage? Then yes, this is not Vietnam.

But in terms of the indigenous people wanting us there?
In terms of a clear plan for victory?
Even a clear DEFINITION of victory?
A clear plan of operation?
And WHY are we there again?
Hypocrisy with virtually every move we make?

MR. RUSSERT: Books and learning--Mrs. Bush, you're a teacher, a librarian. You also helped create the National Book Festival. And I believe we have an opportunity here to watch you addressing a group after returning from Russia and France. And you talked about someone who I didn't know wrote poetry, but let's listen:

(Videotape, National Book Festival address):
note: See transcript here: http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2003/10/20031003-22.html

MRS. BUSH: Upon returning home last night from my long trip, I found a lovely poem waiting for me. Normally I wouldn't share something so personal, but since we're celebrating great writers, I can't resist. "Dear Laura, roses are red, violets are blue. Oh, my lump in the bed, I've missed you. Roses are red, bluer am I, seeing you kissed by that charming French guy. The dogs and the cat, they miss you, too. Barney's still mad you dropped him. He ate your shoe. The distance, my dear, has been such a barrier. Next time you want an adventure, just land on a carrier."

(End videotape)

MR. RUSSERT: Now, who could have written that poem, huh? I mean, what...

MRS. BUSH: Well, of course, he didn't really write the poem. But a lot of people really believed that he did. That evening at the dinner, what some woman from across the table said: "You just don't know how great it is to have a husband who would write a poem for you."

"Of course, the president has been frank from the very very first speech he gave to the country after the September 11 attacks, talking about this is a long war, this is a very difficult war."

The dust hadn't even settled on the ruins of the WTC and, to all intents and purposes, we didn't even know who had carried out the attacks...and yet * already knew it was going to be a long war!

Sounds kind of suspicious, as if he had planned this all along...

73. Lying, pill-popping, MURDERER!
Just what is it that makes Pickles any different from the rest of the bloodthirsty clan?

Hell, Marvin's kids (or maybe Marvin himself) whacked out their Nanny by running her over with the car.

(NO investigation because the offending car just slipped into gear and rolled over her on it's own...yah right)

77. Since waterboarding is supposedly so harmless, let's
dunk Laura and find out what she really thinks. If she floats she's a witch. If she doesn't.....oh well.

79. "But the fact is that we are succeeding."
In the 18th century, the wealthy of London often went to Bedlam to watch the inmates as a kind of cruel entertainment. I guess CNN is just following in that tradition and making it available to all of us.

82. Dear Laura
I know you like to read, so may I make a suggestion... "The Diary of Eva Braun". History has not been kind to her, nor will it be kind to you.

84. YES HE DID!
Let me clarify:

YES HE DID!

The intelligence was fixed around invading Iraq on any pretense required (including painting a spy plane in UN blue and flying it over an Iraqi SAM or AAA battery until they shot at it) so that the West could secure the vast, largely untapped oil fields there.

In May 2003, US forces found two small trucks full of piping and equipment. A WMD team of experts were immediately called to evaluate the trucks, and after a few hours issued a preliminary report. Those trucks were mobile meteorlogical stations, designed to launch and recover instrumented weather balloons.

The preliminary report was stamped "Secret" and the trucks sent to the US for a complete teardown and analysis.

Two days later, Bush goes on the TV crowing about how we found a pair of mobile WMD labs.

Several months later, the team in the US doing the teardown and analysis issued a final report: mobile weather balloon launching and recovery vehicles.

That report was also stamped "Secret" and buried, and Bush never ever ever corrected himself.

I BELIEVE THAT IS THE DEFINITION OF 'MISLEADING INFORMATION, PICKLES!!!!'

87. Looking at someone in the eye and coldly lying to them is a Bush trait
And to survive she had to learn it from her mother in law the WASP Queen.
