The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force in Kabul confirmed that the attack in the Zhari area of Kandahar province late Tuesday was believed to have killed civilians, but could not say how many.
"Eight civilians have died and nine others were injured in that attack in Zhari," Kandahar governor Asadullah Khalid told a press conference.
The dead included women and children, Khalid said, adding that the strike had targeted three compounds in the district which is just west of the main city in the south, Kandahar.
