Giant retailer (Walmart) under siege
It sounds more like Caiifornia is under siege. These carpetbaggers must have their own Karl Rove: they are relentless in their march to conquer the golden state. By litigation or by political campaign, the cancer is spreading.http://sacbee.com/content/business/story/7901580p-8840009c.html

1. kick- CA DUers - any idea has to how this is going?
The war is just heating up.

With 170 Wal-Marts and Sam's Club warehouse outlets, the company has barely scratched the surface in California (Florida, with half the population of California, has 196 stores). Its planned entry into the California grocery business stokes the fire even more.

Already the nation's largest supermarket chain, Wal-Mart plans to open 40 Supercenters in the state -- and probably more -- including in Northern California cities such as Woodland, Yuba City, Chico and Redding.

4. tried to put one in here but the people said NO!
We don't want a Walmart here where I live in Humboldt County, CA. Walmart was seen to be the parasite that they are a long time ago.

I hope Walmart dies a quick and painful death! They don't stand a chance here and this is an area plagued with a horrible economy BUT we don't want 'em!

U.S. OUT OF HUMBOLDT COUNTY!

2. Shopping at Walmart sucks big time.
It is just a little step up from Pick and Save.

There is no oxygen in the air, which smells fowl. Screaming kids sitting on the floor of the toy isle with cheap junk toys sounding off all around them. Isles made for walking are crammed full of cheaply made stuff from China that you don't want anyway.

I hate going in there. It reminds me of what the whole planet will be like in about 50 yrs from now.

If I were going Xmas shopping I would go to this nifty surplus store in Lake Isabella. The have every kind of clothes I wear, Wranglers and flannel shirts, boots, etc. for much less than Walmart and the place is never crowded.

3. Not in Oaktown
Our city council has banned their mega-stores. Not sure about smaller Walmarts, though.

5. My community has local actions against Wal-Mart this weekend
Dear VC Living Wage Coalition members and supporters,

Join the National Organization for Women (NOW) Ventura County Chapter and the Ventura County Living Wage Coalition (VCLWC) in a two day action against Wal-Mart's anti-worker and anti-community practices. On Saturday and Sunday, December 6 and 7, NOW and the VCLWC will be sponsoring leafletting actions in front of Wal-Mart stores in Simi Valley and Oxnard.

When& Where:
Simi Valley Wal-Mart, 255 Cochrane Street (right off the 118),
Saturday December 6 from 11 am to 1 p.m
Oxnard Wal-Mart, 2001 N. Rose (right off the 101) Rose Avenue,
Sunday December 7 from 11 am to 1 p.m

Who: Ventura County chapter of the National Organization for Women (N.O.W.), the Ventura County Living Wage Coalition and other groups concerned about economic equity and social justice JOIN US!!

Why: to publicize Wal-Mart’s discriminatory promotion policies (the subject of a class action lawsuit) and other poor labor practices:

Wal-Mart pays its women associates less than it pays men in the same job and women are disproportionately employed in lower paying hourly jobs. Women received fewer promotions into manager roles despite the fact that women have higher average performance ratings in hourly jobs than men.

More than 3 of every 5 Wal-Mart employees can't afford the health insurance the company offers, leaving many to rely on public assistance for their families’ health care needs Wal-Mart exploits undocumented workers it employs, paying them below minimum wage, and using them to drive down wages of industry workers.

Help bring the community together in opposition to Wal-mart's anti-worker and anti-community practices. Organize a group of your friends and family to join us for this important economic justice action! During this time of year it is important that consumers become aware of Wal-Mart's unscrupulous practices.

7. They'll have to try for the Central Valley--the Coast won't allow 'em
Maybe out in the boonies of Fairfield, Fresno, etc. they'll be able to get a foothold--if people out there are too dumb to think about the long-term effects on labor, health benefits, small businesses, etc.

But most of the California Coast (Humboldt Country, the Bay Area, down through Monterey, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and into L.A.) is vigorously opposed to Wal-Mart, if I'm not mistaken.

10. No more than I. . . . .
. . . .and I've actually worked there. Will not set foot in the place now, and haven't for about five years.

WallyWorld opened in nearby community -- Avondale, AZ -- in 1997, eventually expanded into a Supercenter. Now they want to build another supercenter barely 3 miles from the existing one in next-door Goodyear, AZ. Goodyear Planning Commission has recommended the city council not grant approval. LTEs in local (weekly) paper are running about 4-1 against WallyWorld. Those who support it are usually shouted down in the next edition, and none so far has come back in her/his own defense. C'mon, how can you defend yourself when supporting an entity that all but guarantees you low wages, no insurance, and wants to do the same to everyone?

I won't wish harm to any living creature, but DEATH TO WAL-MART!

9. Giant anti-walmart billiards have gone up in the STL
Edited on Fri Dec-05-03 02:32 PM by SaintLouisBlues
They are paid for by a local union, and direct people to this website: http://www.walmartwatch.org/

Recently I've seen feel-good walmart TV commercials, propaganidizing about what a great place it is to work, and what great health benefits they have, blah, blah, blah.

Me thinks they are starting to sweat a bit.
