Hastert, GOP stand together amid Foley scandal

Hastert, GOP stand together amid Foley scandal

POSTED: 1:41 a.m. EDT, October 4, 2006

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The White House and GOP leaders are standing together in supporting embattled House Speaker Dennis Hastert, under fire over the handling of the scandal involving former Rep. Mark Foley.

Four days after Foley, a Florida Republican, resigned amid allegations that he had inappropriate correspondences with teenage congressional pages, a conservative newspaper called on Hastert to follow suit Tuesday.

An editorial on The Washington Times Web site said Hastert, R-Illinois, should "do the only right thing and resign his speakership at once."

"Either he was grossly negligent for not taking the red flags fully into account and ordering a swift investigation, for not even remembering the order of events leading up to last week's revelations -- or he deliberately looked the other way in hopes that a brewing scandal would simply blow away," the paper wrote. (Watch Hastert say he didn't initially see the inappropriate e-mails until ABC published them -- 2:25 Video)

Several top Republican leaders, including President Bush, rushed to Hastert's defense.

House Majority Leader John Boehner also said Hastert should keep his seat but acknowledged that the Foley matter was Hastert's responsibility. .......

5. Everyone's Waiting for Dubya To Give the Word
Seems that the Resident is in charge of Congressional Ethics. If they can just tear him away from the torture and Constitution-trashing long enough to get him to deal with the scandal.....take your time, George, take your time!

The long it hangs fire, the more the GOP is burnt. Besides, who is Dubya going to send in as replacement? The bench is empty.

10. Not according to Olbermann.
His show reported that ever Republican they talked to has said that Hastert won't be Speaker this time next week, and they're in the process of choosing the unlucky bastard to convince him to resign.

14. They all rushed to DeLay's defense, too, until he became a liability.
Remember those little golden hammers all the Repubs wore as a sign of solidarity? Oh, yes, those were the good old days for the Repubs.

Heckuva job you're doing there, Denny.
